what happens when a coolant sensor goes
Hi, I am having the smae problem on my '93 90. I was wondering if the sensor to replace would be the Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62) or the Electronic Thermoswitch for Temperature Gauge/ Overheat Warning Lamp (F76) Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Well it turns out it was my thermostat. as for you tenaciusd you would replace G62 since it sends the tempreture, but if the oil isnt heating up then it is definetly the thermostat, if you have a 12v v6 like mine its a real b!tch so you may want to have a shop do it and probably even change the t-belt while theyre at it.
It was your thermostat hey? I was hoping it wasn't, b/c thats whats probably wrong with mine. Do you know if its bad to run your engine "cold" all the time? What should my oil be heating up to generally? Thanks.
its very bad, i also changed my plugs since the car was hesitating, the fact that the engine was still cold but i was still driving at a crusing rpm of 3k it caused the plugs to foul causing poor fuel consumption, heavy carbon deposits and just a bunch of other stuff, it isnt too hard to install the thermostatand i can tell you how to if you want but just be aware there is always a risk of damage to the engine. for me i held open the thermostat housing with a crowbar while pushing on the t-belt, it loosen it but once i started the car the tensioner re-tensioned so it was all cool, also i had my little brother help me since there were alot of tight spaces and he has little hands.
crap, I've always thought it was just a sensor and didn't worry about it too much. I hope I didn't wreck anything.
Does it make a big mess changing the 'stat? Where abouts is it on the engine? I might just bite the bullet and take it in.
I was looking for those sensors, and it seems i would drain a lot of coolant pulling those sensors out, is this true?

hey SAudi, if you would write up a detailed explanation of what you did, that would be great. I know the timing belt was just done on my car, so I really don't want to do it again if I don't have to. Everywhere I've searched, they tell you to pull off the belt and water pump and everything like that.If you can tell me how to just get the thermostat out and in, I would really appreciate it. Thanks. Cheers.
yeah i got your pm and ill take some pics and probably send you a copy of instructionsand try to get a post in the DIY section. Does it make a mess? yes, because i didnt draint he coolant either so thats something you may want to do. the car runs great and warms up fast but i may have another problem on my hands as it takes a while for the car to start warming up, but then again its 10degree in chicago and im pretty sure the clutch on the radiator fan is stuck so thats something i have to look into but otherwise if i have th car in the garage where its just a cool tempreture the car heats up within 10mintues and equals out at the center position. otherwise its pretty straight forward directions.
Wow, you're a life saver man. That would be great if you could get that to me. Out of curiousity, what does your oil heat up to generally. I want to make sure it's just not a sensor problem...
before this my oil would heat up witht he the coolant and not go above 160. its now at the more normal 180-200 degree range depending on if im nailing it or just crusiing.
