2000 a6 intermittent no start

RE: 2000 a6 intermittent no start
Won't start like no noises or anything or cranks but never runs?
Or noises, but not starting noises ie clicking, woo wooing, humming?
A little more info makes this an easy diagnose.
No noise, bad battery cable pull out the volt meter and happy hunting (this one sucks)
Cranks but never runs, dying fuel pump or clogged fuel filter, it will die completely soon enough.
clicking noise, probably a bad starter, could be a dying battery but the starter is far more likely
I am going to pick bad starter anyway because I am guessing you drive it to work, leave it for 8 hours, drive it home, and it only won't start when you get home and are like " gotta run to the store" and then it doesn't start because bad starters always won't start hot and will start cold when they are first going out.
It would also be nice to know your mileage (I mean realistically I would like to know the last 2 years history on the car) but atleast tell us if it is 75000 miles city driving with no major repairs done ever... cause then I could say "well starters don't last forever, I would have liked to have seen yours go further but it is time for a replace."

thanks for your input. the battery and starting system are fine. the motor cranks over fine. ive noticed that when i turn the key on, if the epc light does not come on the car wont start. if the epc light comes on the car starts and runs fine. its very random and starting to really **** me off. it sucks not to know if the car will start or not.
