Default 98 A8 quattro

seems as though the 98 a8 has a soft transmission. or is it the torque converter that goes bad then takes out the trans? I have 2 friends that recently got rebuilts with less than 100K on their cars. Mine has 57K and a noice coming from the torque converter that sounds like the flywheel bolts are loose. It shifts fine but coming to a stop (while coasting) on the highway it surges. Would a new converter clear things up? If so where would i get a replacement (other than the dealer)? The transmission shop that rebuilt their transmissions put rebuilts in and finally had to get one from the dealer that worked correctly.
Thanks
JaY
