Default Audi a4 1.8 - Help!

Okay.

An Audi was advertised as a non-runner on Ebay but turned-over, I know a tiny bit about cars so I asked some questions and visited it before bidding. It was advertised as not having seen a mechanic and he didn't know what was wrong with it, but had checked the obvious [battery/starter motor]. It had it's cambelt intact and I knew of a few other things that could be overly expensive but it didn't sound like it.

Basically the car turns over but it just makes a noise. Sounds like it has no fuel IMO but mechanic said it sounds like the cam belt had gone noise...

I took it to a shop that specializes in electrics in cars, they put in the diagnostic machine and only problem that came up was the starter motor. But, apparently the previous owner had checked this and so me and the mechanic believed it wasn't just that....

He looked under the car and he said by the looks he thinks the cambelt has gone someone has replaced the belt, and then looked at the damage [as some bolts are missing] it has caused and decided to sell it on in ignorance.

As he only deals in electrics he told me to take it to another garage.

I paid half via paypal so I'm going through the measures to get that back if I find out the cambelt has gone at some point recently.

But how much will it be to diagnose this approx? What else could it be?

I hoped it would just be a new fuel pump or something like that. Just thought I'd take a chance and sell it on again if it didn't work out...
