Default BEING RIPPED OFF

Hay people,

Please can anyone give any advice? My A3 1.9 TDI (T REG 1998) has recently been in a back street garage as the gear box gave up on me, as I found it very difficult to replace the old with a new one I chose to have the old one refurbished. my car has been given back to me (NO PAYMENT HAS BEEN PAID) but the problem has not been fixed, it has no 5th gear and its jumps out of 2nd plus the acceleration is extremely poor, also the gear box sits slightly more to the right and quite a bit back giving the impression it is already in gear. I have spoken to the garage who says I need to replace the cables this will then resolve the problem... HAS ANY ONE HEARD SUCH A THING.. I took advice form another garage who said (WITH OUT LOOKING AT THE CAR) if the old gearbox has been put back in the car and fitted correctly then the car should drive without any further complications. It was also mentioned that the cables should not have to be replaced. Has any one came across anything similar, or is anyone able to confirm the cables might well be the problem. AM I BEING RIPPED OFF.... HELP!!! I have no idea about cars, Ask me to cook a 5 course meal and I’m your women, ask me about cars and unfortunately I come under that stereo typical group of most women.
P.s If I’m on the wrong site, can anyone advise a site / forum I can use.

All suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi BLU1,

I'm no gearbox expert, but, a few things come to mind. 1st, I think you're reffering to the gearSHIFT-lever that's "slightly more to the right and quite a bit back." Not he gearbox. And, given that the shifters location has changed, it seems that the first diagnosis is more accurate. As you maunveure (notice the "English spelling, neat, huh?) the shift lever it acts upon either rods or cable (depending on gearbox design) to select specific gears. If it's not where it's supposed to be, it seems to be a reasonable assumption that something is not adjusted properly.

If the original garage is the one that gave you the diagnsis of cable issues, why dint they make those repairs as they were refurbising your transmission? Seems retarded that they would give a customer back something that doesn't work as intended. Which speaks to what the second garage told you. Obviously it wasn't repaired correctly. Not sure about the laws regarding shoddy workmanship for repair shops, in your area, but, you may have cause to take it to a different shop for additonal repairs, and have the original shop pick up the tab; or, as you seem to have already decided upon, NOT pay the first shop for their half-***'t work...

Others will, no doubt, chime in with a better diagnosis. Check back often!
