Default Check Engine Light-Help!

My 2006 A4 has been in the dealer shop three times for a problem that they cannot diagnose. The check engine light comes on, the car starts losing power and runs a little rough, then the light goes off and the car runs fine, or it starts blinking on and off and and runs terribly. The problem happens randomly. Many times if you shut the car off and re-start it, it is fine. I've had to have the car towed 2 times []& the car has been in the shop for about a month total. Help! They've replaced coils, checked the cylinder compression, etc. I've only had the car for 8 months and put 11,000 miles on it. Help, my friends with other foreign cars are mocking me!

they should be replacing the car, or at least the engine, if you're having that many problems.

Do you tighten the gas cap properly every time you fill up gas?

Yes, that is what I am thinking. I just hate that it has gotten to this point. It sounds like my car is having similar problems as the early 2000 year A4 ignition coil recall. I've contacted Audi, hopefully they will come thru for me and replace the car. Thanks for your input.

You should look and see if your state has a "lemon" law.

In utah if you buy a new car, and if there is a mechanical issue that prevents driveability or safety of the car, and the car is in the shop 3 times in 1 year or a total of 30 days which ever is less, the dealer is required to replace your car at no charge to you.

Not sure if that helps in your case, but just an idea.

Try posting this in the general tech section. Not gonna get too much help in the New Member area.

it could work, however when you turn the key to the on position, the cel comes on before you start the engine, most emission specialists know to look for this first to make sure people arent removing the bulbs.

also if you are throwing codes, most states wont let you pass if the car is throwing more than 1 code anyways.

best thing to do is find out what is causing the check engine light to come on, and fix the issue, your car will thank you for this too.

and if the CEL is flashing that should be a misfire

but what code is it throwing, are you taking it in to the dealership while the code is on or after are they having similar problems?

put what code it is throwing in here or like someone said the tech forum and someone might beable to help find somoene in your area with a vag-com http://www.steve-hall.com/cgi-bin/VAG-Locator.pl

and go from there

Whatever you do, don't take it back until they can guaranteed it's fixed! I had a chronic check engine code due to engine misfire, took to the several dealers at least 5 times, and they could never figure it out. Then my warranty expired, and now I've been driving around with my check engine light on.

Turns out it's and evenbigger issue when you need to get emissions checked, or if you want to sell your car. Who would even touch it with the light on? My recent attempt, they wanted to replace some hoses for $300, and lo and behold it's back. I know this is blasphemy, but I'm planning on taking a hit, and getting rid of it for a japanese model.

Oh wow...I wish North Carolina had that. I had to get my TT serviced four times over the summer for the same problem they always failed to fix until I took it to a private mechanic and he figured everything out the first look...
