Considering an A6?
Hi,
I currently do not own an Audi A6, however my father does. He has a 2001 a6 2.7t auto.Right now I drive a 1993 Infiniti J30t and I'm considering buying a 2004 A6 2.7t that has 87300 miles on it for $12500. Do you guys think that it is worth it or should I try to squeeze more out of the dealer. I found another dealer that is selling one for $23800 with 36000 miles on it and it has the S Line package. Also I was wondering whether the instrument cluster problem was fixed for the 04 models. Also, I remember when my father had had his a6 at 66000 miles he had one of his turbo seals go bad and it was leaking on the starter. Is this a problem common among the a6s?

From one newb to another, welcome to the forum!
There is a lot of information on this forum. DEFINITELY go to the A6 group. At the top you will find a sticky that talks about being a new 2.7T owner. VERY HELPFUL!!!
To put it into perspective for you, I just purchased an '04 A6 2.7T S-Line that is in impecible condition (45k miles) for $16,500. It does NOT have Nav or Bose. But, I can buy a TomTom and upgrade the stereo later (or get a 2-DIN head unit that has both!).
What you will find on the forum is the 2.7T is a fun engine with a lot of performance, but it is a maintenance hog. From what I read, and other people have told me, is to stay with a Japanese car if you don't want the maintenance expenses. You won't have the performance of the Audi, but you also won't have the bills.
One suggestion I have is to make sure the car you buy has less than 50k miles on it so you HAVE THE OPTION of extending the manufacturer's warranty. WarrantDirect.com is another well known 3rd party warranty source and you'll get better pricing if the car is currently under the manufacturer's warranty. There is a lot of talk about extended warranties. Some people are against them, some people are for them. It's an insurance policy and nothing more. But, if you do blow your turbos, or tranny, it's about $5k.
That being said, general MAINTENANCE such as the Timing Belt (TB) is NOT covered under ANY warranty unless it BREAKS. That means you will have to replace it at your cost at around 65k miles. Not replacing it is a VERY BAD and dangerous idea. Again, you're hoping it doesn't break because if it does while you're driving you are screwed. I think the cost to replace it is $1300 or something like that. Some people mention doing other work while the "patient is open".
The car I bought had the Audi service performed at 5k, 15k, 35k and 45k. It just had the 45k service and inspection (brake lines flushed too!) so I don't have to spend the $250 to get that done. YAHOO! I don't know why the prior owner didn't do the 25k service, but overall my car has been VERY well maintained. My suggestion BEFORE you buy is to contact your local Audi dealer and talk to them about: 1) Extending the manufacturer's warranty (about $2500 for 3 years/100000 miles)and 2) Talk with the service manager about getting the car's service history (you'll need the VIN).
After putting down a deposit on mine, I came here to learn more about them. I was on anothe forum and it really didn't have as much info as this forum. This place gave me a headache, but there is a lot of very valuable info here...along with some *** holes...just like every other forum. You'll find there is this VERY weird dynamic between A6 and A6 S-Line owners. The standard A6 owners don't understand why A6 S-Line owners spent more money on their cars for aestetic upgrades and 15 more HP. There are enough gear heads and mod monsters on this forum to help you spend your moneyon mods to get you 70+ HP. If you plan on modding your car for performance, then getting an S-Line really isn't the best way to spend your money. But, if you're going to keep your car mostly stock (look into extended warranty here!!!!) then you can geta great deal like my S-Line if you look hard enough and have some luck.
I'm thinking of asking the moderators here if they will start a S-Line forum so members can talk about modifications that aren't done for performance, but done so to improve the longevity of the car (turbos, suspension, etc...).
Well, I hope that helps.
Regards,
Mark
