Default Gas question from a new owner

A4 2.0T

Manual says 91. The dealer says I can put 89. Which grade should I be using?

It's a 2006, and I didn't even know there was such a thing as 95 gas.

Check your owner's manual, it has specified what gas you should use, and on my it says no problem to as low as grade 89, even with ethanol(less than 10%), and the manual says nothing too much about which grade would gives you better mpg, so you might have to run the result yourself, and I think what effect the mpg the most is the drivers habits him/herself...

the reason you want to use a higher octane is not only to eliminate the possibilities of pre-detonation, but you dont know the quality of the gas, that is another good reason to always stick with 92 where available.. Take the time to search the archives as there are many different opinions on this subject.. welcome to the forum!

The members here have given you good information. The minimum recommended is 91 although you get the best performance out of your engine at 95. In the engine specifications for the 2.0T it has been stated that regular unleaded gas can be used with a slight reduction in power. I recommend going with the 91+ always. That's my opinion.

Welcome!!!

All gas is the same...just different octane ratings. If the quality of regular 87 in that gas station is bad, then the rest are too. 91-93 octane is what to use, anything less than 91 retards the timing to prevent knock, hence the slight loss of power. Has nothing to do with detergents either. All grades of gas are required by law to contain detergents.
