Default Got another Audi

Hi, I guess this would be a place to get some info. Just bought a one-owner A4 B5 2001 Avant manual tranny. Low miles and driven by a little old lady. The first thing I did was to replace the crankshaft position sensor after it crapped out on my wife. (It's her car; but not for long heh, heh) Bought the part a a Bap Geon for $50 and installed it on a Friday afternoon. Next week I took it to my mechanic to have the timing belt replaced. I just got done watching the 5 min video and I better wait until I have plenty of time to do something like that myself. Like in two years when I retire.

I'm looking to increase the efficiency (power and gas) of that little engine so I'll be asking questions.

BTW, I had an NSU TTi just like my avatar and it was a hoot. The company was bought by Auto Union later on. Lots of history making.

Wilkommen to the forums

lots of good information to be found here. what engine in the Avant? it is helpful for us to know so we can better answer questions. Regardless, you can increase the power or you can increase the MPG, but you can't really increase both (without an engine swap).

good luck

Oops. Duh, I think that would help.

It's a 1.8T

I also have a 98 Passat 1.8T manual and I never had the pick up, nor acceleration this wagon has and that makes me very happy.

I read somewhere a guy came out with a customized heat shield that should help with the efficiency. Also, a few things in my to do list is a cold air intake system, a TIP, a HFC, and some nice tunes (exhaust).

Regarding the exhaust, I wonder if it would be wise to by-pass the resonator and rely on the muffler alone. I had an old Audi GT and when the cat went bad, my mechanic "dusted" it and mounted it back. The tune in that engine with an empty cat housing was very pleasant and the emissions were still below of that for a non-attainment (smog) area. (BTW, I help write the guidelines for non-attainment area for NYC) Of course, those were the days of minimum electronics (i.e. O2 sensorS).

Any way, I would appreciate any help, direction where I can find parts for the above or better ideas. Always willing to listen.
