Default Hello

Hey everyone,

My name is Mike, im from a small town in Ontario Canada called Kingsville, its south of Windsor which some of you may know of.

I am a huge fan of Audi's, specifically the early 5 cylinder cars, there is not another better sounding engine in my ears. Unfortunately, I don't own one.

I do however, own a 1987 Mazda RX7 which is undergoing some major surgery this winter to become a serious drag car...10's here I come.

My next project will hopefully be transplanting an Audi 5 cylinder into A first or second gen RX7, hence the reason I have registered here, I hope to get as much information as I can about which engine to use.

If anyone could point me towards some good threads, or sites where I can get some good info it would greatly appreciated.

I agree with you on the 5 cylinder engines..I think they are the best engine Audi had.

What type of horsepower is your goal?
How much money would you like to spend?

Best bang for the buck, is the "MC" 10 valve turboversion found in the '86-'90ish 5000 turbo.
Stock is around 160 horsepower, but can be built up to over 400 horsepower.
They are easy to run, and work on, and even easier to modify.

The next step is the "AAN" 20 valve turboversion found in the original C chassis S4's, and first generation S6's (which are essentially the same car.) '92-'96 220 horsepower stock, with better low end torque thanks to the multi valve head. These have seen 500+ horsepower.

My HP goal is around 350 - 400 max, Id really like for this to be a daily driven street vehicle.

I want to spend somewhere around $2500 - $3000, but assume (from my recent scouring of the internet for engines) ill be spending more along the lines of $4000 - $5000, oh well im in no rush.

What about turning N/A motors turbo, I can get a non turbo 20 valve engine quite easily and cheaply(car included, haha), is it as simple as different pistons/rods?

It's good to have a spending amount.
For that much, you can get a 20vt, with the harness..get it running correctly after the install...then tune it. To achive the amount of power you're looking for, the 10vt, would be too much work, and more expensive probably in the over all cost of the job.

Modding a NA 20v will get you no where near what your goal is, even with slapping a turbo on it.
It's going to cost you more $$, and more time to esentially tear down the NA, and swap too many parts from the 20vt.

You're best bet might to be looking at a totalled 20vt car. Around 2-3 grand for the whole car, and you get everything. Engine, harness, ECU, Turbo, Exhaust mani, down pipe...etc.etc.

One great place for totalled Audi's is www.force5auto.com they are located in New Hampshire, and currently have a few 20vt cars. (91 200, and 92-96 S4/S6)

I'd try and find a Audi 80 on ebay and get the classic look with that fantastic turbo-charged 5 cylinder engine....Just one mans opinion though.

Good Luck

i would get a non-turbo one and turbo it if its a serious project. you'd have to replace a lot of parts on the turbo'd one anyways. and those engine's will do 400hp easy and reliably. the best source of info for you is probly www.motorgeek.com the 034 guys are always over there and they have hooked up a few of those straight 5's. and 034 could provide you with most the parts you'd need
