Default Just Bought My First Audi

Good evening all.
I have been roaming this site for awhile, looking, learning... Well I finally bought my first Audi. I live in Boston and work in Beverly MA and the car will be used mostly as a daily driver. I'm the 3rd owner. The 2nd owner bought the car from Ira Audi (a pretty big Audi dealership up here), he also happens to be my boss, and not very technical.

A quick question:
Is there any way to tell if my car's (2001 A4 1.8) timing belt has ever been replaced? It has 110,000 miles on it and he has no idea if it's even been replaced. The CarFax Report shows nothing.

Congratulations on the purchase!

I guess one way to find out about your timing belt is by checking the record, however record only shows when it was done at the dealer.

if you're not sure, its best to assume not. Maybe get yourself a good off-the-books-mechanic, and maybe he won't charge you for parts once he tears the front off and discovers it's been done already.

if it hasn't, and it breaks, it'll cost a LOT more than replacing a belt that's already been replaced, you know what I mean?

Thanks everyone. I spent about 4 hours one night on this forum reading about timing belts and sadly everyone just reinforced what I already knew. I only paid $5500 for my 2001 Audi A4, AWD, moon roof, leather and the 5-speed. I love the car, I know the 2nd owner (he owned it from 40,000 miles to 110,000). If I have to drop ~$900 into a timing belt, so be it. I would still consider the car a deal at $6500.
The car is in great shape. It has a scratch on the hood, and the paint is chipped at two spots on the driver side door. But it rides great, and the body is perfect other then that.

Thanks again all, and I will be 'using' you all for information in the coming years. I would like to get 4 years and another 80,000 miles out of it.
