Default mildew smell in AC vents

I'm hoping someone can help.

I have a 2004 A4 and I'm getting a really bad mildew smell when I turn on the AC. It only lasts for under a minute and then goes away. It happens every time I turn on the AC. It's at the dealership right now and they say there's nothing wrong with it and that they could flush out the vents with a solution. I had that done before and the solution itself smells worse than the mildew.

Anyone have any advice?

Your advice: Post specific questions in the correct forum. This is an introduction forum.

Anyway....

I had that problem a few years back. I removed the cabin air filter and sprayed unscented Lysol into it. I had the climate control on full blast, all vents open. It also helps to turn the AC off and let the fan dry the system out the last 5 minutes of driving or so.

My dad's bimmer has that problem every once in a while (he always has the AC on and never lets it dry out like you suggested), but the lysol trick solves it. It cleans out the bacteria and gets rid of the smell.

Open the hood. It's under the passenger side window. You have to remove the rain shield first (couple of big plastic screws across the front).
