Default more power??

OK, so I'm new to owning an Audi and a lot of my friends are saying that by opening up the wastegate I can get more power out of my 2004 A4 1.8T which is very underpowered. Is this true and can I please get some pointers on how to do this myself and maybe a diagram? Also, what would be some cheaper ways to get more power since I'm currently a college student that has a nack for going just a little too fast. E-mails are appreciated.

Thanks,
Jared

By wastegate do you mean the DV (diverter valve)?
If that's what you mean, it will not add any horsepower.

Since you have the 1.8T, chipping it would be the best bang for the buck. It should add decent amount of horsepower and also removes the speed limiter.

The question will be best answered under the B6 section.

I personally use GIAC custom tuning.

The more known chipping companies are GIAC, APR, MTM, Revo, AWE, and some others.
I think since you have a B6, you should go ith APR. IIRC it will give you the best horsepower out of the other companies.

Ok, is there anything that will need to be done to the engine before I put the chip in or are the stock internals going to be strong enough to hold the extra HP?

You will need to upgrade the DV when you chip the car. The stock DV will not hold up with the boost after the chip.

As a precaution, I would do any boost leak check and make sure everything works fine.

If you go for Stage II chip, you might also need to upgrade the injectors.

i just got my B6 1.8t last week and already did apr s1. let me tell you, the car is night and day different. I have a tip trans, so off the line there is really no difference, but the midrange power and passing torque are significantly different, and much much better. i still have the factory dv in it, and was recommended by my tuner to get a 710n as opposed to an r1 (and he is an apr dealer) as its cheaper and just as good. he also told me my coil packs were outdated. so i have to replace them with the 'r' p/n instead of the 'l'. i read that on here too. very first thing i did was head to autozone and get a k&n drop in. this does absolutely nothing but make me feel better about changing the filter. the one i pulled out was nearly black from all the **** in it. only other mod i'm going to do is an exhaust, but i haven't found one i like yet. i'd prefer to buy used to save $$, but they are so hard to find. hope you enjoy yours as much as i enjoy mine.

As far as exhaust goes, i've heard that Magnaflow saounds amazing and that you can also feel the 10-15 hp boost it will give you. Magnaflow is where I'm headin when al my warranty stuff runs out at 100,000 miles

i've searched youtube and streetfire and all over here and audizine. i just can't seem to find a clear vid of how the magnaflow sounds. i'd also like to hear a stock exhaust with a HFC or test pipe installed. I really am in for the sound not power from exhaust, and since I'll never upgrade the turbo, I'll never need more than 2-2 1/4 exhaust.
