Default New with CEL... or course

Hi All,

First of all great site, been lurking about and reading for some time!

So, like most I've finally got a "check engine light" blinking... so I'm
gonna need some new tools, advice, etc.

First, (answered elsewhere I'm sure) which code reader to
I need to get? ... and I really don't want to spend too much,
something under $100.

I've already, swapped and replaced the coils/plugs/etc... looks
like it's the ICM (Part# 4D0905351) but I'd like to start reading
all the codes before doing anything silly.

Appreciate any help, thanks in advance!

Wilkommen to the forums

blinky CEL usually means misfires. could be a whole host of problems. any generic reader should pull codes. if you plan on keeping the car and doing a lot of your own work you should invest in a vag-com cable $200-$250 (you can ebay a generic for like $20). Works with a laptop and a program called VCDS (VCDS-lite for generic cable). A search should give you the info you need. check www.ross-tech.com for more.

be sure to check the A4 sections. you should post up your questions there, as opposed to here. not much traffic here in the "new member welcome area" we have a lot of active members especially in the A4 sections and IIRC we have a few who are probably pretty local to you (great resources)

good luck

Thanks so much! I was looking at the Vag-Com and VCDS seems like that is the one everyone uses.

Appreciate the tips, take care!
