hi guys! I moved in to Berkeley, CA with my wife just a few months ago and bought a used 1998 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro to get around. I used to own a Subaru Impreza for the longest time so though I do know the difference between a door mat and a belt tensioner, I hardly know anything about the Audi. Things like - what is the PCD of the rims that this car uses? What is the compression ratio of its engine? Is the engine block aluminium or cast iron? What is the injector size? What heat range spark plugs should I be using if I should replace them? I will be busy finding information from the forum archives and reading the members' valuable contribution.

welcome! I don't have any answers for you, but I hope you find them... I too am querying spark plug specs at the moment.

Just sent my car for a thorough inspection. Everything is good and aside from some general wear and tear items like coolant and brake fluid reservoir tanks cracks. My only concern is an aftermarket Magnaflow catback exhaust. the sound do not match the car! Don't get me wrong, I am a reformed Subaru WRX mod junkie. I love the roar of external wastegates, the angry hiss of the BOV and the hypnotizing rhythm of the boxer engine. I gotta leave these behind and go for a quiet and civil drive while my hair grays.

Now i am searching for catalytic converters. At 130k+ miles, it is probably clogged up by now.

If only I had known that there are so many aftermarket parts for the 1.8T!

I have dragged a 1988 A 80 from my sister's house over here, after it sat there for years, awaiting repair. This is a project between me and the eldest, so he'll learn something, then have something to drive.

I had initially been told that the original problem was a crack in the "flywheel insulator" (bell housing?) and was preparing everything to pull the motor out. What I found along the way was a burned out bushing on the crankshaft pulley, or flywheel vibration dampener, so I'm guessing that the flywheel/bell housing is fine. I nearly have the flywheel pulley off; it looks like I need a 21 mm or 20 mm 12-point socket to get the main bolt out, plus I'm working on a makeshift puller, as there isn't much space to get a normal puller in there.

There is (at least) a second problem; the clutch pedal goes to the floor with no resistance. Sure, we may need to replace the whole clutch, but I want to at least start with checking for fluid and maybe bleeding the slave cylinder. The problem is, what I think is the master cylinder is twice the length of that in my (crappy) manual and doesn't look similar. It also doesn't look like what pulls up on the screen at my local parts place.

As best I can tell, this is my Master cylinder:

That's a view, looking back. The clutch pedal appears to enter in the approximate center; the Master Cylinder (?) bolts into the left wheel well (to the right) and there is a boot to the left, over the transaxle. I can't be sure if this is the Master Cylinder, but if it is, then I see no obvious resevoir, or hydraulic lines. Maybe the little hatch in the top center is removed for adding fluid? What appears to be the Slave Cylinder is mounted atop the transaxle:

If that's the Slave Cylinder, then I suppose the hydraulic line to it does not come directly out of the Master Cylinder, but enters the engine compartment through the firewall, ABOVE the Master Cylinder, as depicted here:

Anyway, I sure would appreciate it if anybody can chime in with information for this clutch project. Somebody must have this same set-up, even if my manual doesn't!
