Question from a New Member
As the new owner of a 2001 A6, I used this site for some information before buying. There wasn't a lot that I was looking for but enough to make an informed decision.
After I bought the car and had taken delivery a couple of issues came up.
First was the vehicle service history. I had the dealer print me off a copy of all the work that was done to the car. All I got was a sheet with some dealer codes on it and a statement that all the warranty, 30K and 50K and the recall work had been done. No explaination of the other codes and what they meant. Very strange. The guy at the counter in the service departmet went on to say that they didn't have to tell me because of the privacy laws. ??? WTH. Said it wasn't thier rule, that it was a federal rule. This concerns me, because it's like they are trying to hide something.
The last issue is with the charging system. Does the needle always stay at the right of center while driving? I went to the dealer to get the license plates and when the salesguy went to start up the car all it did was click, click. So luckily I was still under the 4/50 warranty and got a new battery. After the new one was put in, it started much better, But the needle on the dial was still showing like it was charging. Any ideas?
One more question, what type of engine oil is used in the 2.8L and the type of coolant??
Thoughts would be great. Sorry for the long post. Thanks.

Hey dufferdude, welcome to the forums.
When you are driving the needle should read ~14volts. When the car is off it should read less than 12 volts. It reads higher than 12 when the engine is on because that is the alternator charging the battery.
The coolant MUST be G12. The dealer sells it, and not too many other places, except online.
Oil depends:
Castrol, Castrol Syntec 5W-40
Chevron, Chevron Supreme Synthetic 5W-40
Elf, Elf Excellium LDX 5W-40
Kendall, Kendall GT-1 Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-40
Mobil, Mobil 1 0W-40
Pennzoil-Quaker State, Pennzoil Synthetic European Formula 5W-40
Pennzoil-Quaker State, Pennzoil Synthetic European Formula Ultra 5W-30
Pennzoil-Quaker State, Quaker State Full Synthetic European Formula 5W-40
Pennzoil Quaker State, Quaker State Full Synthetic European Formula Ultra 5W-30
Seventysix Lubricants, 76 Pure Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-40
Texaco, Havoline Synthetic 5W-40
Total, Total Quartz 9000 5W-40
Valvoline, Valvoline Synpower 5W-30
Valvoline, Valvoline synpower 5W-30
I use mobile One 0W-40 as my winter oil.
