SO I'm New Here
Whats up all from IN.
I am new to your forum and i like what i see. I am considering buying my first audi here soon, (that is when the talon is running and sold)
I started to love the cars when my friends dad got an a87 in 98... that car is still cool years later. I however am looking at an a4. I dont know much about the problems with them and stuff like that but i think id like a 1.8 tip. I am not dumb enought to not go awd.
I am looking for a car that would be something like the 98 Envoy i used to have that was plush and un believeable.
I want to know what was the best year between 98 99 and 00. I think this is in my price range easily. how is the reliability and all that good stuff with the cars? any other insight and comments would be greatly appricated
Thanks
Jared

RE: SO I'm New Here
welcome to the forums, WantanA$. depending on what you want to do, most people on this forum agree that the best year is the 99.5 because it is a post-facelift car (a lot of major cosmetic upgrades), but pre-DBW (drive-by-wire). the 01 1.8T has an additional 20HP (170 up from 150), so many people will argue that that is the best year for the B5s (B5 is 96-01)...if you're looking to mod your car go with the 1.8T, but if not, the 2.8L V6 is a more reliable car, and also faster in stock form. the tip tranny is pretty good on these cars, no major problems from what i've seen...here's a few tips for things to check out when you're test driving some A4s....
ORIGINAL: bentframe
make sure the suspension is good....worn control arms will squeak, tie rod ends will clunk when you hit bumps, cv joints will click during low speed turns (if you're on the gas), open up the oil cap to look for signs of oil sludge (this is especially important with the 1.8Ts)...do the same for the power steering fluid, as well as the coolant. sometimes people top them off or refill them with regular fluids and that can cause big problems including sludge issues....test the cruise control, the switches are known to fail (typically it's an easy fix, a good way to knock a few bucks off the price ). make sure the sunroof is fully functional as well as windows (check each door's switch individually)..listen on the freeway for a humming/grinding sound for failing wheel bearings..oh, and leave the radio OFF during the test drive, test the speakers before or after driving....also consider the mileage on the timing belt, they need to be done every 60-90k miles....search the forums, there are TONS of threads on all this stuff...
