what is better 1080i or 1080p
my co worker is gonna buy a new HDTV and we dont know which one to get

 

By most accounts, 1080i is basically indistinguishable from 720p. 1080p will have the smoothest motion and sharpest resolution.

 

+1 1080p is the best. but if you get a 1080i 720p TV it will be just fine since TV only broadcasts in 1080i so the only need for 1080p is for BR, HD and gaming. 720 looks really good for gaming. Also LCD is WAY better than Plasma! and DLP is oldschool.

 

actually plasma is more for vibrant colors and lcd for it's sharp images and pictures

 

And DLP is sharp, AND vibrant, AND great contrast, AND deep blacks! Hooray!

 

480i uses the least amount of energy! Save the environment! Stop global warming!

 

which one is better for sports and movies

 

For movies, I'd go with a 1080p display so that you can make full use of a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player if you get one down the line, which would be a good idea.

 

Basically the difference between i and p is how each one draws the frame on the screen. Here is an example:

"i" stands for interlaced. It means when the TV is drawing the frame on the screen it is drawing every other line or pixel at a time for the first frame and then fills it in with the second frame. It looks like this:


Top is Progressive, Bottom is Interlaced.

So as you can see it doesn't create a square box. It has jagged edges which causes motion blur on anything fast moving. In HD it is more noticeable than in SD (Standard Definition).

Now "p" stands for Progressive scan. It basically shows the entire frame on-screen at one time. Like this:



As you can see the progressive frame shows a clear square giving you a much better looking picture.
