Default Awesome week at work. *Decent rant*

I originally posted this on a forum of myself, and about 4 other guys almost like a personal conversation, but i figured I'd share my posts here because I've got 30 minutes before i can punch out, and Im bored, and pissed.

Back pay paid today for the raises they were supposed to give out in Jan. here at work.
I was given a below average raise (average apparently being 3% even though Im the only person in the machine shop that runs more than one machine at a time regularly, hardly ever scrap parts, revamp processes to save time/money, design/build fixturing, and most of my work comes in less than the quoted time.

On top of that, I was told I was being given a 2.8% raise (inflation is a little over 3% I think?), and once I did the math on the actual pay increase, it was 2.48% increase.

Walk out the door now, or wait until I have another job lined up?

boss just explained the difference, but it doesnt make me happier.

base pay was XX.00, but i was hired for second shift, which added a 20% differential. The company absorbed second shift into first, but since it wasn't my decision to move to first, they let second shift employees keep the differential.
Now, with reviews, they're cutting that to a 10% differential, with the option of adding another 10% if we're willing to work split shift (no second shift option anymore).

I was told 2.8%, because thats roughly what it works out to once you take the base rate, add 10%, then 2.5% on top of that to.. something... everything about this place is convoluted. NOwhere on my paycheck has it ever even listed a differential, just a base rate, hrs worked, and a dollar amount that doesn't equal rate x hrs.

Either way, in the end, im under paid, with more responsibility than most of the shop floor workers, and I received a below average raise.
Iv'e been insulted, and Im sure when I sit down with the manufacturing manager, he'll say "oh well", because they don't understand the value, or extent of the work I do here.
I have one fixture they're all moist in their panties about, they don't even know that's one of probably 5 multiple application fixtures I've made on my own accord.

So, boil it all down, I do more work than most, and get paid less than most just because I've only been with the company for 2 years, and in fact, will be taking a payCUT.

BTW, I didn't get a raise last year. Their reasoning was that hiring me and telling me the job paid X dollars, but they were going to start me at a reduced pay with quarterly progress reports until they were satisfied I could do everything they wanted, which really only took me 5 months to complete what they had laid out for a year. Since those progress reports involved adjusting my pay towards the agreed upon rate in my hiring letter, they called them raises and justified skipping the yearly cost of living adjustment because "You just got a raise a few months ago".

I took a ******* paycut from my previous job to work here, because by everything that was laid out in my hiring letter, I expected to be making much more than my previous job within the first year or two.

It was essentially a horizontal move financially, with a lot more responsibility.

shop your services around. even given teh poor economy, good, skilled employees ARE an asset. if they're not willing to pony up, shop around. It's what I'm getting ready to do (2-3 months-ish). now, IF (and ONLY IF) you care, once you do get a better offer, give them teh opportunity to meet or exceed it.

or

fukkem'.

Create a profile on LinkedIn. Make it as detailed as posible, and allow your profile to show up in searches. Reach out to as many people as you can (familiy, friends people on here) throught that website. You will be surprised how easily you can network through that site.

All good advice.

I actually was supposed to have an interview with another local machine shop last friday, but the dudes kid had a kid. First time grandfather or something. I showed up 15 minutes early for the interview and was told I missed him by 10 minutes. I found out about that opening by a recruiter out of NYC contacting me on LinkedIn.

I'd prefer to stay here, because while I'm pissed, I'm pissed because Im allowed to manage myself while most of the shop needs to be spoon fed... but I get paid the same... or less, than those guys.

Will give them the option to continue to employ me here, but I doubt they'll take it. Essentially will be asking for a 33% raise which will put me on the upper side of average starting wages nationally for a machine operator, aka, button pusher.

I draw up my parts on the computer based off paper prints, set tool paths, pick tools, then generate, and sometimes hand edit the programs. Thats waaaay beyond button pusher...

BTW, ever see G-code? Its all matrixey...

I threw this together to face a cast copper piece where a bolt fits thru the part.

I used to run CNC milling machines for a maintenance and small production shop up in PA a few years ago. Sounds to me like you're way underpaid for what you're doing.

I only did very minor programming, basically changing tools and resetting jobs and stuff like that.

Together, this forum could take over the world.

Wish me luck... interview in an hr and a half. Small shop, we'll see what they're willing to pay and what benefits are...

Yeah, I agree wih everyone else. Get a job somewhere else where you're appreciated. If you're doing most of the work, they should be begging you to stay within the company. Way to appreciate a good employee.

Good luck on the interview. I know you'll do well but let us know.

Guy running the shop at the potential new employer is rather cocky, which I was forced to combat with my cockyness.
We're sorta at a standoff. Hell of a way to apply for a job.
He's telling me he'll only accept the best, because its a world class (third tier) supplier to aircraft/biomedical/defense type businesses. Kept going back to past applicants not being able to calculate true position, and holding true position to .001" tolerances over 17"...
Showed me a part, which I would best describe as looking like an oil pan for a slushbox as an example. Its machined complete from raw stock, in a fixture. I had to ask where the difficulty was, because there's no way, or reason, for the part to move, unless you put too much heat into the part and warped it. He gave me a look like I was naive to the machining world. I think he was just talking up his game too much.

Nevertheless, he likes my attitude and enthusiasm, and my wire EDM experience, as they're looking to buy a wire EDM machine in the next few months.

Did not like my asking wage. Which may mean that if I was forced to take this job, it could be a lateral move, if not worse. But it would be being paid roughly the same for being a button pusher instead of a programmer/machinist. Less pay/less responsibility.

Playing it by ear, and keeping my eye out for other options. My cougar wants me to start my own fab shop.
