he says when he has the key on like the battery position the lights will come on and everything. But once he goes to turn the engine over it just makes that click, no attempt to turn over...and the lights stop working. If he turns the key back to battery the lights work again....any ideas?

yeah tell him to buy an audi. (its probably the starter)

 

yea i was thinking alternator (although there were no signs of it going bad beforehand), perhaps fuel pump? (isnt there usually a fuse for fuel pumps?), starter, etc.... any help is appreciated

 

the first thing to do is check the battery just to rule it out. See how many cca's it has.

 

if the battery is gone it could be the alternator but the fuel pump wouldnt stop the engine turning over. most likely starter

 

smack starter with hammer guarunatee it'll start

 

well, the hammer thing does sometimes work... once.

Might not have to replace the starter though, could just be the solenoid.

forget tapping. use a sledgehammer and then tell him to get an audi jk
