i had the same one as you with same specs, inspiron 1500 right? the 15", only thing good about it was the screen resolution, had the highest one, but it was a piece of ****. paid less for my mac and i love it.

I support roughly 300+ desktops/laptops and I screen all laptops before purchases. I can tell you DELL's HOLD UP JUST FINE and it is the best bang for buck.

Company bought my work laptop and I am pleased.

bought my wife, last Christmas, an Acer laptop - she loves it - no problems thus far and it's a refurb.

but make sure which ever you buy has a spellchecker

Acer is usually pretty good and Dell works sometimes but I'd go with Toshiba for a laptop as long as you don't really mind all the extra **** that comes preloaded on to it, but that's on all premade systems for the most part.

Really there is nothing wrong with vista as long as it's 64-bit. 32-bit sucks and should be put down but 64-bit works quite nicely and can actually recognize more than 3 gigs of RAM.

I'd say that 4 gigs of RAM, 64-bit vista, and duel core (2.2 Ghz) or better would set you up for mostly anything you want to throw at it. Plus with those kind of specs you can probably find one for around $600-$800 since most things come with quad core which would rape quite a bit.

not to disagree with you Colin, but to the OP: Only get a mac if you can find a nice one used. If you buy new, you are getting screwed in the *** by overpriced hardware. That said, i'm a PC guy but I've used macs in all of my graphic design/movie making classes and I have nothing against them.

very true. i got mine last year off ebay, brand new for $1150 when my model was going for $1600 at the time.
13" macbook, 2.4ghz intel core 2, 2gb ram, 120 gb hd, dvd burner, bluetooth, wireless n, and remote. i plan on getting the new one in late summer for school and giving this one to my mother.
