mercury milan??

mercury milan??
my mom's looking for a new car, 20-25k, just a basic sedan for commuting. but she wants something with more than average HP...i kinda like the mercury milan (this is for a 40-something mom, not me), safe, decent gas mileage, looks pretty good..i dont know about their reliability though...you guys have opinions on it? any other suggestions? i got her to check out an A3 but she wants something more reliable.

she keeps her cars for a long time...that's why she wants something new, she wants to break it in properly..otherwise i'd talk her into getting a used b6 under warranty...and the A3s in that price range are the super base model no option fwd A3s, any decent options and you're getting up in the 30k range. she's really careful with her money and i know she won't spend more than 25k, MAYBE 26k if it's something she really likes

If she likes to keep her cars a long time, then I would get something Japanese and run away from all Mercury dealers. An Accord starts at around 18,000, so she could get one with some nice options for 25,000.

I've driven it and the ford 500 during my car looking exp for my b6.
Both were peppy and wll rounded the interior was drawn of clean lines. Nothing fancy.
I drove the all wheel driver cvt versions. I enjoyed both. They were peppy but boaty. nothing super sporty. Gas milage was decent.

And the interior has got to look 100 times better than a milan. I know this without even looking up picts of either car. Beyond reliability is the ability to hold resale value. If history is any guide, then the Accord will do it and the milan will do very poorly on this. I'm not sayin she's gotta get an Accord. I hear ya on the "there are so many of them" thing, but daayum don't let that send you towards a mercury dealership.

Volvo S40. I would give it a better rating that the Merc because it's essentially a Mazda 3 chassis and engine (meaning reliabilty), but with slightly more upscale styling. I think you can find them new for low 20s, and the T5 AWD is a fairly enjoyable car to drive. It's not going to shock and awe anyone, but it's peppy. Plus the S40 just has a more lithe and graceful aesthetic appeal.
And let's be honest, Volvo doesn't have a great standing with younger buyers, but Merc just screams geriatric. I read that average age of Merc buyers in 60-70 somewhere.
