RE: military guys
yeah, manual labor pays well and you can probably find something temporary. how about the landscaping business....especially there in FL, i'd think there's always a market.
have you tried checking at the school you go to? lots of times they have a career center that helps link students to jobs.
justa thought.

Personally I would say dont join if you are not willing to fight. The gov. dont put time and money to train recruit's how to fight and stay alive in combat just so they can have a free education. That's what grants and student aid is for.

Nothing personal against you Brian, but I was quit pissed to here all those kids and families complaining about having to fight because they joined when we were not at war, then all of the sudden they were sent out when **** hit the fan. Sorry but that's what you are signing up for, like it or not.
lol i know i just wanted to make sure i didn't have to spend like 4 really long tours of duty over in iraq or anything. i would not be one of those hypocritical army dudes that complained all the time and everything. this is why im doing RESEARCH first before i just go and sign up. the military has some appealing and not so appealing attributes. i just gotta weigh my options.

landscaping/construction work in south florida...definitely. i did that for a couple months and made DAMN good money. its hard work but worth it IMO. but in Tallahassee there is practically none. like 95% of the people who live here are college kids. so its a crapload of student housing, a bunch of places to eat, and bars. the only place i could hope to get a contruction job is actually at the campus but i checked and there's more qualified people than me already waiting.

and ya our school has a job place. i went there and the only thing that turned up is modeling naked for an art class (which im gona go talk to them about after my classes. pays 12/hr)

only pools in tallahassee are the neighborhood pools. there's very little actual housing up here, unless you drive a couple miles out of town.

i have no problem doing hard work at all. if i could literally move hundred pound weights around all day and make at least 10/hr doing it, i would. i just cant find any jobs. i'll look into moving stuff tho. thats a good idea.

Hey Chaos - don't get me wrong - personally I feel every male should serve at least 18 months active duty once they hit the age of 18 like they do in nearly all the European nations. It teaches you things like personal pride and resposibility, self assurance, confidence, preserverance and self discipline. These are qualities that most young adults are sorely lacking in America today.

You can't truly lose gaining that.

1- I do NOT wana go to iraq or anywhere out of town for that matter. Is that possible?
A: Depends mainly on your job, unit size and location. High demand jobs like mechanics (me), infantry, truck drivers, engineers/construction are always getting deployed, its almost a given for them to see atleast one tour of duty. In the military you WILL go out of town eventually.
ok so i dont mind having to go at some point in the future. but does going out of town necessarily mean going to the middle east? and is it possible to definitely not go in the next 3 years? I would really like to graduate college before i get deployed.

It's very hard to know if you won't be deployed at a certain time. I am enlisted and in College, but I accept the fact that I'll more than likely be in for a long deployment before I graduate.. in fact, 2-3 times with all the schooling I have in plan and the way the Country's going.

Being deployed does not mean you will go to the Middle East, but your job can definitely give you an idea where you'll most likely go. I know many (combat arms) Soldiers who want to go to the Middle East but were instead sent to Asia, last I heard from one, he found out it was possible to have his orders changed by switching with someone else (and getting papers signed by the right people).. but I don't know how that worked out.

I can't tell you whether you'll go to Iraq or not if you enlist, but you can get a job that definitely lowers your chances. The Military is currently taking people out of the chAir Force and Navy and training them with the Army or Marines for 2-3 weeks to be drivers in Iraq, which is a dangerous job. It's not just the chAir Force and Navy either, many people from the Army and Marines have been re classed into other jobs as well. This isn't happen to an extreme degree but it's happening.. the Military, mainly the ground forces, are very strained.

2- I'm currently enrolled at FSU and have class MW 3:30-630 and TR 3:30-4:50. Will i still be able to get a job in the military?
A: As reservist yes, fulltime hell no. As reservist you'll only have to do your mandatory 1 weekend a month, 2 weeks drills. But keep in mind you'd still have to complete basic training which is nine weeks long, then advanced training in your specific job (MOS) which can be 5 weeks to 18 months depending on your job. Plus you can be deployed at any time, Uncle Sam doesn't care if you're in school.
ok so im definitely not gonna be on active status. is it possible to stay in the reserves or national guard for at least 3 years? also would it be possible to do basic training while being enrolled in school? I have to do summer session classes this summer as well. Only a small amount tho. Would this conflict with my schedule? Also one possibility of a career choice of mine is to own a body shop. Is there anything in the military that would prepare me for this?

3- Which branch should i join?
A: If you enjoy getting being on a ship with a bunch of guys for many months then the Navy is for you. If you like 12+ hour days, horrible living conditions, rations, being out in the woods/desert/swamp for weeks without showering, and getting deployed constantly then join the Army or the clinically insane Marine Corps. If you prefer the best living conditions, coed dorms and max 3 month deployment then the Chair Force is the way to go.
haha Chair Force sounds like my kind of thing So is Air National Guard what i should be looking into?

I would say that is your best bet, but again, it doesn't mean you won't be sent to the middle east. My troop will be coming back from Kosovo in the next few months (have already been to Iraq), but another troop in my unit are expecting their orders for Iraq (possibly Afghanistan) very soon.. and if they don't have enough numbers to send to the sand box, they will go through other troops, including mine, who can be sent over. So I lucked out in one aspect, not having to go to Kosovo so I could continue going to school, (which is a toss up, I would have loved to go to Kosovo) and theres a chance I will be going to Iraq instead of starting next semester.

If you really want to not have to leave College, go ROTC, it's 100% that you won't be sent anywhere for a while.

4-What kind of money would i be making the first year?
A: Umm...undocumented aliens doing day work will probably make more than you do. Higher the rank better the pay. You might get a bonus but you won't get it all upfront. Maybe half now and installments down the road. Deployments are where the money is at, the pay will almost be doubled.
lol i dont need that much money and im gona be going to school 4 days a week so if i could make a couple hundred in a weekend than that would be ideal. Also i heard they pay for college, which would really help since i lost my bright futures scholarship[:@] tho i still have some other scholarships and financial aid. i basically get 4,500 a semester (tuition is around 1500 so i get ~3,000 deposited into my checking account) so will i just get the whole 4,500 and the military just pays for my tuition? cuz that would be sweet.

Wrong. You don't pocket any of the 4500, thats UP TO what they will pay. However, you can pocket the monthly check from the GI Bill and of course drills.

That all said, I've been in the reserves over 4 years now, been through one deployment and had many great experiences. I don't regret it at all. I'm not gonna say you should or shouldn't do it, but consider long and hard before you commit. The military is not the only solution to being short on cash.
yeah this is just one option im thinking of

I agree with Trey, definitely consider all of your options before enlisting. I also love being in the Military - countless worthwhile experiences with no regrets, but you should know that the needs of the military come before your own. If you definitely do want to join and have done your research, you'll find that ROTC is the best route to go if you want to finish school uninterrupted. To me it sounds like you just need the money, I would consider other options.

And about waking up at 4am, you'll probably have to do something like that, I know they do PT every morning.. I don't know much about ROTC (I love being a grunt), though I know plenty of people who do, so I could ask for you.
