My bro is horrible with cars
So last week my brother calls me because he had a hard time backing up in his 94 Nuttless Supreme. He had to give it a lot of gas and then it made a grinding noise. At the time I was on my way to Chicago with my wife as part of her birthday trip. So the next day they (him and dad) take it to a shop, and they say it needs all new rear breaks for 600 bucks. That is for rotors, calipers, and pads. I tell my dad that we can do that for alot less. So he got the parts for $250. Once we got everything apart, we found out why the right rear was locking up in reverse. There was absolutely no pad on that side, and the piston was stopping it!!! He said that he didn't realize the grinding was the breaks. When we pulled that caliper out, the piston fell out. He is 18 and we are 10 years apart, and sometimes I wonder if we are really related!

You'll make fun, but I did a similar thing to the drivers front on my old Cavi, but I knew what was going on the whole time, and knew how much pad was left. I did have to replace the rotor, though...
I do baby my new A4, just in case you were worried. That will NEVER happen to it.

i've run a pad down to metal on metal, but theres a difference between that, and running THRU the rotor. Thats gotta make a god awful noise and vibrate like crazy, but no doubt the driver kept going, oblivious to an issue.

the rust on the thread shows he was missing a lug nut

I see that **** all the time. Thats not even close to the worst ive seen. We had a guy bring in his dump truck which was the big semi sized ones and we took the front left tire off and the rotor was so gone it was in 2 pieces. The stopping surface part was not attached to the center anymore.
