sounds to me like maybe he didn't get murdered, but the scammer probably contacted fedex and took action against 'jeff'. i think the reason he disappeared is because he was embarassed, and probably SUPER pissed, when he was contacted by fedex and told he was responsible for the customs fees...or worse, charged with international mail fraud...the whole ebay/internet scam is a completely different story...but he had an agreement to send a $2000 dollar laptop to the UK, and he sent a binder. it was a good idea, but he didn't give himself enough anonymity to make it work.

he had an agreement to send a $2000 dollar laptop to the UK,
doubtful, since the scammer never paid for anything, not even shipping. Fedex got paid to ship an item, that is it. No laws broken there. It depends on what he wrote as the description on the package as to whether it was mail fraud. If he specifically wrote it was a computer/electronics/laptop worth $2000 then it is mail fraud.

If he wrote it was a powerbook worth $2000 then it isn't because it could be considered art work named powerbook.

No ebay scam either since the transaction took place outside of ebay.

The ironic thing about the whole thing is the scammer probably could have sold that ppp powerbook on ebay for more than $2000. This story was so popular, almost legendary, I'm sure that item would have gone for far more than a real powerbook.
