I haven't been able to do good action shots. The preset for action doesn't work well - the shots still come out blurry. Is the trick to set the shutter speed to a very fast setting, and then adjust ISO to compensate for less light?

Yeah and also use your F-Stop. Another way is to actually track the car/object as you take the picture. If you can get close to the speed of the car then you will get a better picture/blurred background (if you want it).
