Being European i can tell you it's "sport 4" for the S, "Race Sport 4" for the RS.
The TT model comes form the Tourist Trophy on the isle of man which I've been to watch, very cool.
Audi comes from "Auto Union" and i think the four rings came about when 4 companies merged in the early 1900's to create the Auto Union.

Being European i can tell you it's "sport 4" for the S, "Race Sport 4" for the RS.

It stands for "Shagswell."
The man who proposed the S model idea, co-engineered the S models for Audi, and had a key part in the development of the 4.2 V8 was a man by the name of Roger M. Shagswell.
Audi Shagswell 4 doesn't quite roll of the lips as easily as S4, hence the moniker.
