Why do I see more A8s on the road than S6s?

RE: Why do I see more A8s on the road than S6s?
Its all down to import numbers really, A8s have been here since 1997, selling 2000 to 3000 cars a year, and S6s, well, I've only seen like 5 or 6 total. And thats in New England, the home of the largest Audi dealer in the nation, and where they actually make a stab at selling Audis, which is more than I can say for Indiana, where the only dealer in Indianapolis, Tom Wood, didnt offer A8s until the D3 model came along.
BTW, having lived in Indianapolis for a total of 3 years, I had never seen an A8 there.

I was back there a couple months back, and, having been overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of American cars on the road (it was like visiting a diff country) I saw a single D3. Having talked to a bunch of Audi dealers in the northeast, even a couple dealers in Rhode Island never sold them (A8s).
The customer profiles of the D2 A8s in the states always interested me, but lacking any hard data I can only suspect that the average age of A8 buyers was perhaps slightly higher than those for S-class and 7-series buyers, and that a sizeable portion upgraded from American sedans. Add to that the fact that they were available, for the most part, on the coasts. Audi was reluctant to introduce the A8 to the US after the alleged unintended acceleration debacle in the 80s, so its easy to see why the A8 was offered in small numbers in certain geographic areas, mainly for variety's sake as Audi's sales increased during the economic boom of the late 90s along with other euro brands.
