Default Why does rain make everyone wreck?

If anyone else out there is or was a police officer they could share in my frustration, but for those who aren't I am sure you notice this as well. It has been raining the past 3 days and it seems like all I do is respond to car wrecks. Yesterday we had someone drive through a shopping center and into a store, yes they parked their car in the middle of a GNC. Personally I love when it rains, I think that is when I enjoy my quattro the most. After driving an AWD car I don't see myself ever buying a car without it. Even if you don't have AWD how hard is it to stop and think, hey there's a lot of water on the ground I should probably slow down and not jam on the brakes when I hit a a puddle. One lady who was driving didn't know what to do when her ABS kicked on because she thought her car was broken when the brakes began to shutter. Sorry I had to vent

please share your thoughts and or war stories regarding rain and other drivers

I live in SoCal, so enough said. Stupid freakin people here!

Personally, growing up in Colorado, I don't remember there being any problems when it rained. If there was a big snow storm then there would be problems, but everyone did there best to drive properly. It might be different now that half of California has moved there. LOL

Cheers!

aren't the roads a little more slick when it FIRST gets wet because of the dust and oil on the road?

people think they are expeienced enough to drive the speed limit or faster....and they dont take slick roads in consideration so they make a slip up tha wouldnt be bad on dry roads but deadly on good raods and they crash....stupid ppl

Heheh, you should see them here in NY. First snowfall that comes that is significant (3" or more) and all the SUV jackasses and truck rednecks keep right on going like it's summertime. We can have huge rut piles of slush and other slick stuff all over the road (with a solid coating besides), and they'll barrel right through at 75mph thinking "I have 4wd, I'm invincible". Invariably, within 5 minutes, you pass them when they're in the median, lying on the roof of their invincible winter war machines, wondering how the hell they could've crashed. People are unbelievably stupid, and the disheartening thing is, like George Carlin says, think of how stupid the average person is, and realize that by definition of "average", half of them are stupider than that. Makes you want to cry.

I notice around here people totally forget how to drive at the first site of rain or snow. It's really frustrating when you have to share the road with these idiots.

Last night i was out with this girl and toward the end of the night we drive past an accident. It was obvious that someone was blowing a red light and the other was turning left at the last minute. But it barely even raining! I was just happy that we passed it just as the cops got there so I didn't have to deal with the gawker's.

im not an officer yet but hopefully within the next year soo my frustration hasnt started yet but i do notice all the people crashing. the one thing i dont get though is why people drive like *** hats in bad weather? you ever notice people seem to drive all slow and really annoying in nice dry weather but once it rains or snows there flying past you. regardless of what car you have awd or rwd fwd u can still crash jus cause u have awd and a suv doenst meen u can drive how ever u want. ughhh im happy people like this crash its their own stupidity. you have to slow down in anybad weather
ok i got it out enuff of my rant

I personally love driving in the rain; did it for about an hour and a half last night. I've never really noticed a whole lot of people wrecking in the rain here, but my friend with the '94 Mustang spun it around in the middle of the streeta couple nights agoafter it hadrained.

i've been paranoid to drive in the rain for at least 10 years.

about 10 years ago, my band was recording at a studio in new jersey. we wanted to get some "herbal inspiration" for the recording sessions and decided to take a run to manhattan in my friends father's gigantic station wagon (we used that to haul the gear to the studio).

so, he and i are driving towards NYC and are on 1/9 north going uphill around a curve. the back end of this station wagon slips out, and he and i end up going about 65mph sideways uphill! at the last second the rear of the car slams back and we crash into the center divider, facing oncoming traffic. i look out of the rain-splattered windshield and see 3 semi trucks coming at us full speed. at the very last second the truck closest to us manages to swerve into the middle lane and avoid hitting us. i will never forget the sight of that red kenworth cabover getting closer and closer. i seriously thought we were gonna be dead.

after that, with the front axle totally bent and the car bouncing up and down like crazy, we manage to limp into NYC and get what we came for. we barely made it back, and my friend had to tell his parents that it happened in jersey so we wouldnt get in trouble. we should have turned right around, but we were young and stupid.

so anyway, i must have some sort of mental scar or something because when it rains i get all kinds of anxiety and i get flashbacks of that day. so i drive pretty carefully in the rain.

which brings me to yesterday when my audi saved me twice!!

first, on the way home from work traffic stops suddenly at a light and i have to slam on my brakes. i feel the ABS kicking in and prevented me from sliding. i came to a stop about 2 feet from the car in front of me. thank you audi.

second, coming around a curve too fast and the ESP kicks in, guiding me smoothly thru the turn. thank you AGAIN audi.

driving the TT has made me more confident in the rain, but i am still pretty careful. i commute about 44 miles a day and see all kinds of idiots crashing out in the rain and snow. and the funny thing is that most of them are people that drive SUVs and think that just because their truck is 4WD it means they can still fly down the highway at 90.
