(harmonix and red octane made guitar hero 1 and 2, but once the games got popular all of the big companies wanted to buy out the two small creators. MTV bought harmonix, who made rock band, and activison bought red octane - so the two games still have a lot of similarities because they were created by the same people - but there are some obvious differences; such as the notes in rock band are those wierd bars instead of the circles because red octane owned the rights to those circle notes. make sense?)
