WTF Gas is over $3.00/gal?!

RE: WTF Gas is over $3.00/gal?!
New Jersey prices for gas tend to be a bit cheaper. I paid $2.83 last night for 93 octane.
But once again, the oil companies have done a brilliant job of using world events (uncerainty about crude oil supply which raised future prices to an all time high of $72 per barel). Production shortages (how the hell does that happen..I guess we still have refineries that are offline because of Katrina storm damage) and successful lobbying (along with us car makers) against more stringent mandated fleet mpg figures, and cyclical pricing strategies that raise prices due to "summer" vacation demands (but then they never go quite back to the starting point, and the summer cycle happens earlier each year and last longer) to lead to Consumer Price Sensitivity Elasticity.
So we get conditioned slowly to accept higher prices as a naturally occuring event. We get pissed at $3.00 a gallon...but that just creates the opportunity to make $2.60 the new accepted price that does not **** us of. 2-3 years ago it was $2.00 gas that got us pissed...now it is $3.
I tell you these guys are brilliant!!! Remember last year when the Oil Company Exec were having to testify in Congress about the record profits they were making!!! It's going to happen again. But nothing will come of it. I mean in the end gas is cheap here in the states compared to almost anywhere in the world. But again that is all relative to what you paid in the past.
All the while we continue to be addicted to oil...and that addiction causes us to shape a good portion of our foriegn policy based on that addiction. SO the cost of our oil addiction really can't be measured just by the pollution, high gas prices, global warming...it is also measured in our huge outlay of resources to maintain this oil culture in our foriegn policy.
And of course, even after this rant....I continue to be part of the problem cause I drive a car that gets 19mpg (I do commute to work with a friend...so I suppose I am doing something).
Sorry for the rant...but I feel better

I'm looking into getting either a 500 or 600cc sometime. Probably after I start college or so. I got a friend who rides mostly ducatis but would probably be able to hook me up with a kawasaki or something to ride
