07 RS4 new vs used
I've basically deceided to pull the trigger on an 07 RS4. I can have the dealer find one for me. New, they're 73,520 +TTL. I'm looking for the dark blue, aka moon jello.
However, there's one rigged just right up in Dallas, used (~7000 miles). They're listing it at 71,900, and it has the extra warranty (+2 years, 50k mi.). I like the idea of a 100k mi warranty.
There's about a 2,500 delta in cost. Add the warranty (maybe worth another 2,000), and figure 4,500 delta. That's 64c/mile for the usage...not bad.
I'm a bit worried about what kind of life an RS4 would lead in 7000 miles by someone who would own one for only 7000 miles. In a car like this, one could destroy a clutch and tires in 7000 miles. Plus, was the engine broken in right (or at all)?
So, my question is...
What are the pros/cons of new vs used given the numbers?...Is the 71,900 for the used one too high?
On edit: Any opinions on European delivery (saves 5%)? I have 1000000 frequent flier miles, and can at least get the flights free.
Well considering you'll save less than $2000 getting the used, you might as well get a new car. With the used one you are considering the right questions already and getting a new one you can make sure everything is broken in right and such to avoid future possible maintenance that could be cause by not honoring the break in period. And who knows, if the owner knew they couldn't afford the payments if that were the case, they might have ran the thing as hard as possible having as much fun as they could before they had to turn it back in. In the end a new car is a better investment.
As for European delivery I'm pretty sure you can't use miles when shipping a car because most airlines don't ship uh..... cars. And a lot of the time they are shipped in containers on freighters across the Atlantic. Save the European delivery as a last resort if you can't find one, of your likings, in the U.S.

For the price difference I would go for the new one, rather than one with all the unknowns. I likewise got the AUDI extended warranty on my RS4. I think that it ran $2300. I figure with a car in the $70k range and so little difference in price between the new and used, I personally would enjoy the piece of mind in knowing how the car was treated and wasn't problem prone. I felt different when I got my Porsche and was able to get 30% off the MSRP with 5K miles on the odometer, but that delta to me made it worthwhile in my mind. Hope that helps.
