Default Importing RS4 or RS6 to the US?

I appologize for sounding naive and new to this but I am currently selling my 2000 S4 because I need something a little bigger. I test drove a US RS6 sedan and enjoyed the power and the handling feel but I don't want an automatic and I would prefer an avant. Has anyone imported an RS6 from europe here? I assume the process for doing so with an RS4 would be similar so if anyone has experience there, that would be helpful. I am familiar with the procedure to import Ferraris and Skylines so I assume it will be similar but while I am awaiting responses from the importing agencies I figured this might be a good place to find out some more.
Thanks,
Ed

i think its standard to the importing you'll prolly just have to change the headlamps and airbag sensors....and other stupid things like that to get it federalized, not too sure though this is going off of things i've heard.

all that stuff and some engine stuff too, itll be slower then the euro version, its gotta meet emissions on our side, so they will most likely tweak internals, change compression n ****..

Thanks for the info guys. I assumed there would be a federalization process involved but wanted to know if anyone had successfully tried it. I know I can get the car through customs but am not sure if it will be possible to get it titled.
Thanks,
Ed

Well I know there are a few RS6 avants in the US, but all RS6s are automatic, so you wont get around that. And in reply to RS's post about the euro models being faster, thats not true, unless it is an RS6+ (which was an Euro only model).
So if you want an Euro RS6 because you dont like the automatic or you want a faster version, neither of those are going to happen, but you can get the avant, and I believe it is fairly simple because the engine is already smog tested etc, and the body has already been crash tested (in the C5 A6s)

Thanks for all of the replies. Boondocksts, are the Avants that are here US cars or were they imported? I can get the car in the country but want to know if federalization is possible for the sake of getting a title and insurance. Obviously the car will be similar in regard to crash tests but legally importing a car involves more factors than a similar car being tested.

Are RS6's available with a manual transmission in Europe? I thought that I had seen some but could be mistaken. Can you tell me more or give me a link to some information about the RS6+. I appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Ed

Avants need to be imported. A manual tranny was not an option, although MTM did offer it for sale, but after talking to them for a while, it came out to about $30,000 and then the cost of shipping the car (oh and it would take 8 weeks to do everything). If you want a manual tranny, its easier to get an S6 and swap the motor and do all the body work and suspension work and every other RS6 part (also not easy at all).
The RS6+ has bigger SMICs, a large oil cooler, and different software, to give it a few more HP.

I am interested in either a 2007 RS4 Avant or S6 Avant which would need to be imported. Does anyone have any links or phone numbers of people who have either done this or do this for people?

Thanks,
Nate
