1st Gen S4
I currently have a 2001 A4 but my financial situation is forcing me to sell it. I love Audi's turbo + AWD combo and was wondering if the first generation S4's are good cars. What modifications are there for the 5 cylinder turbo engines? My car right now has a chip, intake and exhaust but my ultimate goal was to put in a K04 turbo with supporting mods so I could be in B5 S4 territory. So how difficult would it be to get a C4 to B5 S4 specs?
I know these cars are very rare but theres one in my area I plan on looking at this week.
Thanks,
Jon

There is much that can be done with them but I think it is near impossible to get them to drive as well as the 2nd gen vintage. Engine is grerat - a real champ - body & suspension are the issue - just very dated if you are used to newer cars - they are a bit clunky - very heavy for instance...at least they feel it...and even with suspension mods just don't handle as well as newer Audis for instance. Also I suspect maintenence would be a real bear. Can be had relatively cheap if you can find one (I might even know of one - or two even - potentially for sale - DC area...at least one is already modded pretty heavily)...still it really is an older generation car - in a way much more so then the 2nd gen A4/S4 IMO. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are a real tinkerer and into the older cars....(headaches with things breaking down and not performing as well as the newer stuff)...all depends what you want really...its a great car in its own way - but I would not buy one to make it a race car...more of a project/show car perhaps...but it gives quite a bit performance wise even when heavily modded...
I like them, they handle much better then the B5. They seam to be more reliable, especially considering their vintage.
Since they are much lighter, they don't need as much HP, to be as fast. Yes, you can easily make it as fast as a stock B5 S4.

The engine is indeed very good - very strong/well built...but it is a typical Audoitweaked car - and lots goes wrong (just in general) - repeatedly and often (sometimes just little things) - at least that has been the experience of two people I know who have them. And parts are much harder to get then for the B5 series. And while it can be given pretty good hp pretty easily (mid 300s) I'm not so sure it can easily be made as quick as a (slightly modded) B5 nor do I think that they handle better (though admittedly I've never driven one - just based on coversations. And my one friend who has modded the most (quite a bit) still goes slack jawed (when he's not hooting and hollerin!) when he rides in my S4....and he's grown so tired of sinking $ into it he has semi retired it...he drives a new GTO for daily driving now....
