Default 2.7T Rebuild

A few of my buddies and I are planning on creating a B5 S4 project as a drag car and my everyday driving. Currently we're just modding GM Duramax's dieselsgetting them to run low 13 sec 1/4 mile.Just wanted to know everyone's opinion on buying a used 2001-02 with over 80,000 miles for relatively cheap (Under 16,000). Because of the high miles we would most likely rebuild the engine before installing the stage III kit to have a fresh engine on the inside to avoid failures and excessive wear. Was wondering what some basic parts you would recommend in the rebuilt and an approx. price for the entire rebuilt (with our own labor).

Also I would prefer avoiding the '00 because of all the faulty components since it was the first year they were introduced. Basically my main question is a rebuilt necessary for high mileage s4's.

Thanks!

Sorry I know this isn't your question but just thought I would mention I have a high mileage 2001 S4, laser red, 6 speed, with 119k miles for $13,500 obo. Live in Holland Michigan.

Well first off the early ones are not bad at all. If you go STG III you change MAF's anyway. The reliability is really the same regardless of year.

THe engine it self seams to be almost bomb proof. I've only herd on one rebuild, that was do to improper tuning. Really put the money into getting the car custom tuned on the stg III, & lighting up the car a bit. Most complete STG III kits are around $6000, & you need downpipes, exhaust, clutch, trans brace, there is another $4000. This will be after any maintenance that the car needs. Expect at least $500 for the timing belt to get done also. Don't forget IC's for another $1300.

Really for a competitive drag car, you might not be getting what you want. It's hard to get huge HP from the car, it's heavy, coast a lot to maintain. My point is dollar for dollar a mustang, or commaro will be much more complete & faster.

As for the mustang I would never give into a Ford, just my personal opinion. Reason why I'm interested in the S4 is that they are cheap to by used and dont require $10,000s of dollars for a quick 1/4 mile or roll on. Its also a get car to drive around in everyday with descent mpg. I'm mainly to buying a new car for myself for everyday driving, that at the same time can walk over any STI, EVO, or stang that wants to run and that can throw down a fast time at the strip. I guess if problems to come up withone with high miles after the stage III we could always do the rebuild then. But you do bring up some valuable points.

Yeah as said, the engine on the car is bomb proof, just maintain it properly and they'll last forever. One man imparticular who's in SCCA and has done at least 2 seasons in his track prepped S4 with the stock motor, never touched, hasn't had any problems. And as Ferdinand Porsche said, 1 mile of racing is the equivelant of 100 miles of street driving. Not to mention forced induction.

To be honest, it may be cheaper to buy an evo and mod it to go fast than it is to buy a s4.
You can pick up a decent evo some where in the 24k range. And theyre much cheaper to mod and cheaper to maintain.
The evo's can be made fast for a reasonable dollar. If you spend some where in the 15-16k range on the s4 you have to do all the maintence before modding it. And to go stgIII isnt exactly cheap.
And the fact is alot of stg 3 guys are having trouble keeping up with the highly modded evos.
Dont get me wrong i wouldnt trade my s4 for anything, im just saying if your looking for something to make real fast and use everyday..

Audis are a lot nicer to drive everyday since they are considered a luxury car and I would definitely choose a sleeper over a jap car because evos and wrx's are everywhere
