2001 S4 with 112K miles with blown turbos
Does the engine have to be pulled out to replace the turbos? They guy is not willing to budge as I gave up on the car as not worth the time and effort for 4K. If I have a close friend that had tons of experience with these I might be a bit more interested but I am going to pass.
It might end up only costing 7500$ or so, but what about the time he will be spending doing this job? Do you have the space that it would take to do this kind of job? There are a lot of things to consider. In my mind, I couldn't justify buying a car that I can't just jump in and drive off unless it was practically free. I don't have the space to keep an going project up, and I have little time for an engine pull.
I am like a B- at best in the technical realm, and i am wrapping up an engine pull, turbo inspection, cam plug replacement, spider assembly replace.
Project here.
I do have a lift at the shop i share with our Rally team (i drive, not wrench) which was huge. So i agree, the engine pull, and turbo pulls are actually pretty easy..just time...lots of time...step by step. That VIMEO video was key, and lots and lots of marking tape. Every hose, every wire, i labeled on male/female side so re-assembly would be easy.
Tonight, i bolted the turbos back on the pulled motor, both sides, 1.5 hours. (the only thing that will make you curse is the 19mm coolant connection on the top of the turbo..omg, who designed taht placement?) Oh, the germans
I have a new respect for my car, and after going through the past 30 hours or so, dont think i could ever sell it. I know every bolt, nut, connection, SOB hard to reach part, etc. This weekend, engine goes back in, and time to button it up over the next few weekends.
My take....dont be worried, you can do it. BUt do be realistic on the time. These cars are machines, and like a machine, you can replace every part, and keep them running at full power/performance for a very very very long time. I have 174k on mine, second set of turbos (i drive pretty hot) and know now the oil pressure and other little things to watch for.
Hope i dont have to pull the block again soon. But will if i need to. Try to find a lift to use for a month...being able to raise the car up above your head is MUCH easer than creeping.
