2004 Audi S4 - Oil Drinking
Hi everyone!
I have had a few people that have bought the S4 and told me that they have had a problem with the car running low on oil. Are there others in here that are having this problem? I have contacted 2 dealers and Audi themselves. Audi pointed the finger at the dealers. The dealers said it's a problem that Audi knows about. [They pointed their hands up in the air.] Is someone going to put aside the blame and do the professional thing... provide a reason and solution to fix the issue?
I have close to 14,000 miles on my baby... almost time for my 15,000 mile service. I have run out of oil 3 or 4 times now. The first 3 or 4 thousand miles was perfect it seemed. So divide 10,000 by 3.5 times... that's roughly every 2,850 miles the car lost almost ALL of the oil. In most non-luxury/sport cars you get an oil change every 3,000 miles. The dealers and manuals don't say this for the 2004 Audi S4... it says you should wait even longer...every 10,000 mile service time I believe. I think Audi's competitor vehicles usually recommend similar timeframes for oil changes because cars these days are supposedly just built better. I'm losing almost all of my oil in less than 3,000! It's a brand new car. I have had two different dealerships acknowledge that a problem exists, but offer up NO solution.
I spoke to an Amanda G. and bless her heart she tried to help, but she had no clue about this problem or to provide any response. She did however mention she would note the incident for me and let Audi know about this forum, and that other people are having this issue. She said that MIGHT prompt Audi to look further into the issue. That's disheartening to hear that one cunsumer is not good enough to prompt an investigation, but it IS understandable. Brad Hollister was the person who was assigned to this issue.
SO... anyone else have this problem? If so please at the least post or reply to this post that you are having this issue. ... just in case Audi my call made a difference and facilitates their looking into this issue.
Thanks,
And please let me know if anyone has any additional thoughts on this. Recommendations. Experiences.

My 04 s4 burn/consumed a quart of oil before it's first oil change at 5000 miles. I has consumed one more quart since then and I am now at 12,000. From what I understood this was 'normal' behavoir for this engine.
Sounds like you are burning/losing a oil at a much higher rate. Does your oil warning light come on? Mine comes on when I am a quart down. So your first problem seems to be with the low oil warning system...you should never get more than a quart low. I think the engine capacity in a bit over 9 quarts.
I will check around to see if there is any other info or this engine burning lots of oil.
What is the build date on your car?? I know there were engine problems with cars built in 03 and early 04.

My car ate a quart of oil by about 4k miles but those were breakin miles so I really didn't expect other wise. Many people have experienced the 4.2's thrist for oil. If you are losing 1 quart of oil every 3k miles this could be completely normal depending on how the engine was broken in. Also, just because you need to change the oil every 10k miles doesn't mean that you shouldn't check it every 1000 or so miles. Some engines just consume oil. Provided your exhaust isn't bluish/grey then you should be ok.
My B6 S4 had to get an oil/lube change at 4.5 K and then again at 9K. Its a little off since it should be every 5K. But i doubt im having the same problem you are, the harder you drive it, the faster your going to burn through oil, i think.-
My B6 S4 loses about a quart or two per 5000 miles. You can tell when it's 2 quarts down b/c that's when the warning light will turn on. With a 9+ quart capacity, that still leaves plenty to lube the engine under low reving conditions, but I've gotten into the habbit of always carrying 2 quarts in my trunk and pulling over to add as soon as the light comes on. I don't expect that Audi will do anything official about it, since it's a problem that does not seem to harm the car.
I don't think Amanda even post to the forum & I don't think she has a vast technical knowledge.
YOU ARE NOT LOOSING ALL OF YOUR OIL! Your loosing a quart or 2. Now how do you drive it? Lots of stop & go? Do you hit the go pedal a lot? Do you warm up the car?
Any performance engine will consume a little oil. 1 qt ever 5000mi is with in limits. You can change your oil more then the 15,000mi service intervals. I would do it every 8000mi. But remember an oil service at the dealer for this car is almost $200.
Have you had the dealer look at the car to make sure there is not a leak, or that your breather system is clogged?
