a4 or s4
Neither. you probably don’t want to hear it but, as you might know these cars are expensive. I got an A4 as my first car, it had 65k miles and have owned it for 3 years, since owning it I have put over 5g in maintenance and repairs control arms, timing belt, new turbo, 2 new clusters, cv joint and the list goes on and on.
Don’t get me wrong they are great cars, I loved mine and just traded it in to get an s4. But since you are tight for money I wouldn’t recommend them.
But if you must. An A4 would be the cheaper of the 2 to own.

You don't want an S4 for a car in high school for cost reasons and (judging just by that your in high school), it's a lot of car for someone with your inexperience and could get you into trouble if you don't know what your doing both ticket wise and as far as getting into an accident. By a slower car and learn the limits of it before you buy something that's fast.
Well, I'll play devils advocate since the reasonable adults have already spoken.
If you find an S4 you can afford, get it. The 2.7 V6 is better built than the 1.8t. Spend some time online and you will see many more "DOH!"s for the A4 than the S4 (of course that could beoffset by the fact thatthere are far more A4's on the road than S4's). Maintenance wise, most of the stuff you are going to repair is going to cost you about the same on both cars. Spend some quality time finding economical places to buy parts (i.e. stay the HELL away from any and all dealerships. Especially Audi dealerships.) If you shop well the audi will not cost you that much more than servicing a newer Civic. Just know that at ~100k +/- 25k you WILL be replacing: timing belt, wheel bearings, CV boots/joints, all filters, at least half of the sensors, tires etc. BUT that is to be expected of all cars this age/miles. Be responsible and disciplined in how you drive your Audi and it will be good to you. Of course this all only applies if you have a good and fair mechanic or are planning to do the work yourself.
I would have gotten a lot prettier girlfriends in high school if I had an S4.

when I first got my license and A4 it was like 2800 for insurance by myself, if you get it with your parents and are only and occasional drive on the car it will be a lot cheaper. Since I just traded in my A4 to get an S4, I got a quote on insurance and with was 3900 but I did get 2 speeding tickets. And I don’t think the 3900 includes the premiums.
But I live in mass so insurance is f’d up.
When I test drove an S4, it was not much faster then my A4 with only an apr chip, dp, borla exhaust and evoms intake.
