a4/s4?
hey guys,
i am new in general.
i was looking at the specs between the 2001 a4 and the 2001 s4 and the difference in horse powers was 60. and the difference in price for a used on 60k miles was about 4,000 dollars.
is it possible to make an a4 be faster than an s4 under 1000 dollars? how much would i be looking at spending to make my a4 equivilant to an s4.

Im under the impression that the A4 came in a 150HP and 170HP model compared to the S4's 250 HP stock. Making the difference a minimum of 80HP (not to mention tq) a chip on the A4 with exhaust will get you 40 HP while in the 2001 s4 the same will get as much as 60HP making a 100HP difference.... The s4 has much much more power and potential from the factory. The A4 will benefit from a basic mods, but the power gains arent as much.
Overall audi intended for the s4 to be better/faster than the a4 (also more expensive). I wouldnt go around in any A4 expecting to beat many s4's. You would have to look at turbo kits which will cost much more than $1000

Yes, when reading the numbers dont seem TOO far off, especially comparing it to a 2.0T A4. People forget the fact that the S4 is a V6 (aka more torque) and with the bi-turbo the S4 has a much wider power band, meaning it peaks sooner and maintains a higher output longer than a 1.8 or 2.0. The A4 turbos only peak at the max hp for a split second then settle down, before and after the peak. Like I said the 2.7 maintains a higher power output for a longer period of time, resulting in a faster car.
A modded1.8T can beat up on a B6 S4, but thats after over $1000 in mods. However $1000 modded 1.8 vs. $1000 modded 2.7, the 2.7 will walk all over it. Test drive the two. Drive the A4 then the S4, you will fall in love with the S4.

Its not only the engine horse power and torque that are more and better in the S4, don't forget the S has better suspension, and bigger brakes all to begin with. There is no comparision really between A and S, you pretty much will never beat the other. Driving them both is a great idea.
