Question A4 vs S4

Hi, I'm new to these forums, and I'm about to buy my first Audi.
I've done a considerable amount of research, and I know the technical differences between the B5 A4 and S4, but I am torn between which one I should purchase.
I am considering either the B5 A4 1.8T quattro manual or the B5 S4 2.7TT manual.

My question is: Which one has the most bang for the buck in terms of upgrades and modifications?

Right away, I will be doing intake, exhaust, suspension, and a tune, so I need to know which car will react the most to these upgrades.

Which car has the most potential, and by how much?

Which car gives the most performance per dollar?

Any input/opinions will be appreciated.

I think the a4 is a better bang for your buck option, which is why I voted that way. There is no substitute for the 2.7t engine, its fantastic and I am deeply in love with it but its so expensive that I can't say its worth it. There are some seriously fast a4s out there, and going big turbo will definitely put you in the same speed range, but the car will feel like a 4 banger with a big turbo.

In the end I think it depends on how you want your car to feel and how much $$$ your willing to spend.

id say for your first audi go with the a4.

but... if ur good with wrenches and dont mind using them you might be ok with an s4.
with the s4 the labor is the $$killer, sometimes minor repairs require major work.
if you can do all the work yourself they really arent too bad.

S4's are more expensive but the 2.7 is superior then the 1.8t hands down...until you get a 1.8t and modify it you might as well gotten a stock s4 thats in good condition; chip and exhaust and you will still be making more power then most 1.8's around.

Save your money and slowly build an s4 is what i would do if i were in your shoes...but i'm on my 3ed s.... so my opinion is slightly bias : )
