Default Awesome Surprise!

Like most new S4 owners, I was slightly paranoid about the turbos, with 113k on them. So, this weekend, i tore into the car. After about 8 irritating hours, the engine was pulled. Then I removed the turbos, brought them into a turbo shop near us, and had those guys just run a few tests on them. The turbo showed no signs of shaft play, or excessive wear. He said that he didnt know a whole lot about the Borg Warner turbos, but they didnt think they were K03s. Since I got it from a dealer, I had no records or anything of new ones being replaced ever. He made a few calls for me, turns out, they are K04s, figured it out by reading the numbers on the outside!

Went back home, put in the RS4 mounts, mine were leaking something nasty, and also since the engine was out, took the time to gut the precats (turned out really nicely following DIY on audidiy.com). Then i cleaned up and reinstalled the k04s. everything went actually really smoothly. took about 6 hours to drop engine back in, and reinstall front components and bumper, ect.

So now i cannot tell you how excited i am that i have k04s in my car, and it didnt cost a dime, just lots of time to realize this. Now its time to save money, and start the modding, without worring about killing my turbos! I am so pumped about this.

Also, for other newbies, or those intimidated by pulling an engine, its really not that bad, just take your time, make notes, and get a helper, or 2, the two of us did it in a weekend, saved a ton of money that way.

Other things I did were replace the TBB with a samco silicone, 710N DVs, and VAST upgraded brake pads...these were the original plans for the weekend, but decided i had the time and energy, so why not attempt and engine pull. New DVs and TBB have definately lowered the turbo whine, i would assume from the DVs. now I have on order the entire samco kit to support the turbos. also, there is a GIAC dealer not to far who will install it while i wait, they said an hour, at no charge for labor. going to be doing that for sure.

Sorry for rambling, but I'm so excited!

a simple way to tell if you have K04's is to look at the inlet pipes running down into the, k03's are silver, K04's are Black.

What year S4 do you have? I have the B5, and I haven't pulled the engine yet, but from what i've heard, you have to drop it out of the bottome, which my local shop said would take 15-20 hrs. I had a feeling they were full of it, but had no way to tell.

SOAB! That's cool! Now you just need all the supporting things, like IC's, & fueling.

Hey Blue_S4 I am just wondering a few thigns about the pull. I have for a little while now wanted to do a pull on my a6 2.7t, but am a little scared. I have all the tools well atleast I think i do. I just need to know where you found a guide or if you used one that would be great to know. I would rather put k04's in myself than pay for someone to put in k03's that is the main reason for me doing this. Thanks
