B5 S4: 00 or 01?
hey all,
This is my first post, but I have been reading over this forum for the last 4 months. I have finally decided that i want an S4. The problem is what year to get. I have found 00's for as low as 19,000 and an 01 i really want for 23,000 with 48k miles. The thing is, I have read that they can be unreliable (00 model espically).
Basically what Im asking is what can you guys tell me between the 00 and 01? Im looking for any info that makes either one better and if I do choose the one with a little more problems, how bad will they be and how easily are they fixed? Also is the ESP which comes on 01 and up S4's worth considering as a good option??
I did find this site: http://www.s4biturbo.com/faqsdowns.php But i dont know what the H box and T box means, and also since the 2001.5 has better k03's can i possible have those installed?
Thanks for all the help,
Jon

I also found this link, for anyone else considering an S4: http://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/945342.phtml
this has been researched to death, search around...but im bored so...
Most people think the ESP is worth the upgrade alone, being that it can save your a$$ in a lot of different situation. You also have to figure that the $4k difference isnt just for upgraded parts and ESP, the entire vehicle is a year newer and has had a year less to devalue. So next year at this time, the 2001 regardless if it has the same miles, ect will be around $4-5k cheaper based on that alone.
With any s4, chances are there will be problems. As can be said for any car you buy. Its just a matter of being willing to spend money IF something happens to go wrong. And as far as replacing the turboes to 2001.5 turbos, you'd be better off upgrading to k04 or other turbos which will give you much more horsepower for not too much more $$. Its the labor that is involved that will kill your pockets. im just guessing but the difference from installing newer k03's and upgrading to k04's is probably the difference between spending $4-5k and $5-6k. if that.

I have a 2000 S4 that I have had for just over a year and the only problem I have had on the car happened last week when the throttle body went bad. Other than that I have not experienced any of the other problems that have been listed. Obviously my car does not ESP and I have never wished it did. The car won't oversteer in corners. The understeer is fairly significant but if you momentarily lift the throttle after it starts, it goes exactly where you want it to. The build quality has been impressive and I only wish I could get one without a sunroof for more headroom (I'm 6'5"). That said, I need to sell the car to get something a little bigger and am looking at the RS6's. If anyone is interested in it, you can find more information along with what I have thought of the car in the following link.
