Default B6 and B7 Differences for S4

Hi, I currently own an A4 and looking to upgrade to a long dreamed off S4 soon. My dilemma is buying an 04-05 B6 for around 23K or a 07-08 B7 for around 37K. What I am wondering is, other then the obvious looks what are the differences between these two cars?
Transmissions the same? Engines as far as I know is the same. Any reliability issues on the older cars?

Thanks

Serkan

Let's suppose there are reliability issues with the B6 vs the B7. Do you think they'd set you back $15k?

For the price difference, I'd go with the B6. In fact, I'd go with the B6 even if they cost the same. I think it looks better.

Thanks Earthtodan, yes 15K difference is also pushing me to that direction but what I found out is that if I want to get extended warranty for a 2005 S4 I have to pay 4000 to 8000 depensing on how much coverage I want. Having replaced my $8K transmission for 50$ with with current A4 that was certified at the time, I really would like to have some coverage on the car and usually B6s are too old to come with any kind of a warranty.

I am still looking at both options... My real question is are there any technical differences between these cars? like a better tranmission in the new gen., different/better differential/better suspension , exhaust system etc.

The prices you listed are ridiculous.

I just bought a pristine 2005.5 B7 with 44000 miles for $22,900 which included tax, title, license and a 2 year bumper to bumper aftermarket warranty good at any Audi dealership in the US.

Phaytal, thanks, the price you listed looks awesome. I have been searching for a while and the cheapest B7 I have found was a 25K for a 2005.5 from a private party. It is a certified car however Audi doesn't transfer warranty on cars purchased after a certain year so doesn't come with warranty.

I am not sure if this is because it is california but I see at least 3-4K difference between other states and CA.

I am going for a 2007 at the weekend, it is $36K, bumper to bumper until 100K miles. Hopefully I can get it... It is not a great price but I will try to bring it down couple more thousands...

I hope to post back with an S4 in the garage in couple days...

Just remember, the price will become history. The car will be with you for years. Don't walk away from the right car over a few bucks, and don't let the market dictate what the right car is worth to you.

I'd like to add a data point and ask a question...

A month or so ago I purchased an '07 S4 with 22K miles on it for about the same price but not certified. I still have 10 months on the original warranty and I am curious about what it would take to get an extended warranty, with the key question being from whom?

Suggestions, comments or ideas?

Thanks,

Marc Mondragon

Hi Marc,

I have looked to do the same before I bought my car. That is buying a uncertified car and purchase extended warranty.
Since I was very happy with the certification on my last car, my immediate response would be to get it from audi. However I have found out that it is not cheap.

I was looking at a 2005.5 S4 with 40K miles and to get bumper to bumper coverage on that car for 4 years 100K miles they asked for 8K. Which didn't make sense at all since it was so expensive. But they have a lot of different options on coverage and milage so you will have to call them and configure it to your liking.

Since your S4 was not certified they might also ask for fees for inspection.

Sorry can't be of too much help... Good luck...
