Default Cam Chain Tensioner Repair

So I know I need to get a new CCT to fix the diesel sound of my car but my god that is alot of cash for a this part. What I am wondering is if anybody knows what actually goes wrong with these parts. Do the clog or are those pads on them wearing thin to a point where maintaining tension is beyond the maximum stroke of the tensioner. I have my own machine shop and could pretty easily make some new pads if they are replaceable. Also in looking at pictures it appears that there is an adjustment screw that spreads the pads, is this true or am I mistakingly identifying this. Could it also be cleaned out if it is clogged. Hopefully somebody has some experience with these. Thanks ahead of time everybody.

Sorry for the attitude , i like to try & help out but if the info is not in the post it makes more work for those that are trying to help.
You have a tensioner on each side of the engine. It is possible that the tensioner screen under the tensioner is plugged causing oil starvation & then tensioner failure.

As far as the holes they are for the tool to compress the tensioner pistons.

Making your own parts sound like a good idea but you have to remember that the stakes are high if it does not work out (engine full of bent valves).

Remember it is better to be penny wise then pound foolish.

Your best bet is to pop the valve cover of the noisy side and have a look... You will be able to see a chipped or worn pad on the top, the bottom will require removal to inspect. Get yourself a cam tensioner tool, very much worth the $. I've installed with and without... with the tool is much easier.
Obviously if there is any slack in the chain the tensioner is not working properly and should be replaced.
