CV boot replacement?
hey fellas, i just had my 80k mile service done, and one of my CV boots is cracked and leaking. They said it is about $265 to fix, but that I want to do it fairly quickly so the cv joint doesnt have to be replaced too. Is this something that is easy enough to do myself or do I need to have audi do it?
It's a rubber accordion boot that protects the CV joint (constant velocity joint). It has a specific lubricating oil/grease inside that keeps the gears and whatnot, well... lubricated. A broken CV boot allows the oil to escape and can damage the internals in time. Of course, that probably just confused the hell out of you more, but it's apart of your axel assemebly.

The CV boot is the cone-shaped rubber piece on the end. Take off your wheel and you can see it behind the rotor, you should be able to feel around the boot and determine where the crack is.

It seems like a common problem with S4's and A4's in general. Same thing happened to my buddies 2000 S4.
