Default Fuel Tank hairline crack on 2005 S4

I have a 2005 S4 with a hairline crack on the fuel tank, it is not leaking any gas. However, it is setting off my check engine light, and a mechanic told me it will not pass the emissions inspection. I started checking around and apparently it costs $1100 for a new tank. Does anyone have any advice? I have found some pretty decent prices on used tanks, does anyone know what other model audi fuel tanks will fit? Will an 04 A4 fit? Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

yeah probably it set an EVAP code... hydrocarbons are leaking into the atmosphere from the leaking gas tank.... id get a smoke test done and make sure that it is leaking from there...lol.. what if its just a gas cap or something??? just make sure before you dump a lot of $$ into something that is not going to fix it...

That's a great idea. Thanks for the advice. Any clue what should do if it is that crack.

Don't try to weld it without emptying out the tank and airing it out REALLY well first.

+1 make sure its completely clean before doing so. You don't want the tank going up in flames from fuel vapors.
