gutting the cat
Your gona have to do that yourself, technically its illegal to tanper with a cat if its still good. So no shop is going risk gutting one. And be careful when you do gut it, its possible that you might throw a code, dont know if you still have a warranty or not?

There are 4 cats, 2 pre cats after the turbo, then the big post cats. If your post cats are dead, then you need new DP's or install new ones, you only remove the pre cats.
yes, you will throw a code, the secondary O2's need to be moved past the post cats. Gutting the DP's is the super easy part, removing & installing the DP's in the PITA, expect at LEAST 8 hrs to remove them.
its not illegal to remove the cats as long as the emissions are within limits ( the presence of a cat dosnt mean it will fail emissions ) you can have it tuned to compensate then return it later when its passed

Even if you pass emissions, you can still fail for other things on the car (mostly in CA)

i bought the car from a private dealership though. so does that mean audi wouldn't fix it?

That being said, don't forget that you catch more flies with sugar than vinegar. Try approaching the dealerships humbly and see if you can get them to willingly do the work before getting medieval on their asses.
