Default New all the way around...got questions.

Hey good folks,

I am new in every sense here. I just ordered a 2007 S4 Avant and it should arrive early September. I have never owned a sports car or an Audi for that matter, also never been to a motorsports forum before. I always wanted a high performance car but never had the money. But now I'm there and I decided to buy the S-4 over the other cars out there for several reasons.

So before it arrives I want to know a few things that may seem obvious but I know you folks will have the answers...

1) What is the best way to break this car in? Do you drive it under 60mph for the first 1000 miles? Is there a good way to break in the transmission (its a 6-speed)?

2) Is there a gasoline that is specifically good for this car? I always used premium in my Subaru Outback but beyond that I don't know if certain Oil companies have 'crappy' gas or if there are some that are better than others.

3) iPod integration...The dealers seem rather oblivious as to what options there are. However, I went to Audi.de and found that there is some iPod kit that you can add to the cars over there. Do you guys have any idea what the best solution is (audi, dension, mp3yourcar, etc.)?

OK this is probably enough questions for one post.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

... alright, I guess it's my turn to take care of one of the newb's. THANKS GUYS!

Now regarding your questions...

1) I've heard that the best way to break in your performance engine is first 500, slow speeds, don't go above 3500-4000 rpm, then 500-1000 start breaking her in a little more up to 5000-5500 rpm, and then 1000-1500 try to drive as hard as you can. The reason for this is it teaches your piston rings to expand to the sleeves of the cylinder walls nicely at higher rpm's. I haven't tried this before on a new car, but Trev with a new B7 RS4 on the forum tried it and says it's working great for his car. Doesn't seem to have any oil leakage. Whether you want to try it is up to you, I'm not saying you should do this or not. You can always just do what the factory recommends.

Stay below 60? I've never heard that rule of thumb before, because breaking in the engine usually refers more to rpm's. You can be in second gear at 6300 rpm or so going 60 mph, and that's not breaking in the engine.

Don't worry too much about the tranny, just make smooth shifts, and give the clutch a couple hundred miles to wear in properly before you start hammering it.

2) Just use the recommended fuel, probably premium. Anything lower can cause detonation. I've heard of oil companies selling "bad" oil, but I wouldn't be too worried about it.

3)It would probably be cheaper to just find an installation kit for the iPod and have some custom shop nearby intsall it. I've seen them all the time, don't know where to get one though. If you find a nice custom shop I bet they can get it for you.

Hope this helps, maybe someone can add or correct anything I might have said.

Thanks Mott!

That all makes sense. BTW - I see the reference B6/ B7 in reference to different S-4's out there. Does that notation correspond to the year it was made?

Thanks again for the advice.

Yeah, it's just a reference to year and model.

No problem, man, congrats on the car! Thinking about any mods?

Yeah I don't think I'll do anything to this car. I did a custom build to order option & as far as I know there really isn't anything that should be changed. Who knows...can you think of anything that you would mod with 2007 S4?

Anyway, now its just sit and wait until September.

well if you're willing to fork out some cash towards your car, then get yourself a nice exhaust system and i guarentee you'll love it, the sound the 4.2 makes will make you think of an old muscle car but more refined. definetly a worthy investment.

i'm impressed with mott's answer to your questions. he did a splendid job. but anyway, i agree. you must do an exhaust mod. it will sound heavenly. you'll make some girl just come right up to the car and ask for a ride. don't you love driving an audi??

sk8 - I use a Griffin iTrip as I can move it from one car to another ... works just fine.

If you want a permanent mp3 solution, this looks pretty good http://www.phatnoise.com/audi/support.htm

These work too, AIUI http://www.apple.com/ipod/ipodyourcar/
