Default New to me '01 S4

I had an '04 Imola Yellow S4 some time ago but was not very active in the forum as it was my wife's car and she wouldn't let me touch it. I'm back though as I just purchased an '01 S4 with approx. 63K miles on it for commuting.

Looks pretty much untouched as far as mods go and appears to have been maintained well. It is an automatic but what I needed due to traffic and spending a lot of time on the phone while I drive.

First off, what should I worry about? What is this engine capable of mileage wise when well maintained? This is my first forced induction car so I'm pretty green with this car.

With this many miles, am I still justified in putting a chip on it? I'm not looking to flog it but just add a little extra zing that either an APR or GIAC chip would offer. Looking at going with StasisStreetCOs to cut some body roll and still give a compliant ride. Any thoughts?

Thanks all.

Imola rocks and i wont have u say otherwise

The motor can last for ages if maintained properly and go for the GIAC + Tip chip, more aggressive than APR

Dont 4get to do the TBB, DVs b4 chip

Imola is the fastest!

It's a fun car! Chipping it really opens the car up. Don't worry about the turbo's, they will go when they feel like it, and there really is not much you can do about it.

For chips, read the S4 FAQ. Get what ever one is local to you. The GIAC Tip chip helps out a lot. Don't forget about the DV valves.

For the ride, i would go Vogland. A lot of guys have switched from the Stasis SP to the Voglands. If you pony up for the TS then go Stasis.

Link for Voglands, & other Audi stuff...

[]... Okay, sorry for misleading. My '04 was Imola and it was definitely fastest at that time, now I have Silver (not sure of the formal name for the color) and I'm pretty sure that is going to be the fastest now.

I read the S4 sticky and that gave a lot of great information and saw the reference to DV... I am lame though and have no idea what a DV valveis (intake/exhaust valves?) or is that something with the turbo/waste gate? Total rookie here on forced induction.

Looks like I have a GIAC tuner in my area. Does the GIAC Tip chip improve transmission performance? I was hoping post-chip it would shift a little firmer.

Saw the Vogtland CO's, is that a pretty easy swap? I was rooting around under it over the long weekend and it looks pretty straightforward, any words of caution? Thanks!

Just like half the S4's out there, it seams every car now is silver

Diverter Valves (blow off valves) there under the plastic engine cover right by the throttle body. It's a weak link on the S4 it can cause the turbo's to over boost shorting the lift of them. Good news is upgrades are cheap, the 710's are stock but replace with the 710n, or some other rebuildable one.

GIAC is a great chip, yes the tip chip will let the trans shift faster. Also you might want to change the trans fluid, I'm sure it's nasty. The trans will shift nicer after it.
You can also VAG-Com the trans, look back in the S4 FAQ for the link to VAGCOM.

If you have ever swapped suspension before you can do the S4's it's not hard. Just watch the pinch bolts on the upright, they can get rusted in and not want to come out.

How come the diverter valves come with different springs? How will I know which one to use?

I'm not sure of what one you are talking about. Most come with a "stock" setting spring, 10-16psi ish.

I know Forge has "Tune up Kits" that comes with spacers & springs. The springs are rated to work at a certain PSI. So you match the spring to you boost. If your in between, then you use the spacers.

Thanks! I'm happy with it, used to own a few BMW's in my time.
