Default oil

I recently dropped of my car at shop for some repairs and they changed my oil for me. They used regular oil GTX 5w30 for my '02 S4. Is this ok? There's some sort of cleaning agent they put in my oil and said to just bring it back after 3,000 miles. They told me that when the car first came, the factory did not recommend to use synthetic. Can anyone confirm if this is true or just crap?

I wouldn't put anything but synthetic in. I'm pretty sure the manual says "use synthetic you cheap bastard".

yeah, i hear ya guys... i'm just usually stuck at work and hardly have the time to drive it back there and have them change the oil again.

as long as there won't be any damage or future problems from this one incident, i'm ok with it... i think i saw a PDF file somewhere on this forum regarding oil types allowed in my car and regular oil is fine.

never use anything but synthetic oil in a turbo car. reason being, turbos are cooled and lubricated by oil and they are very hot, natural oil breaks down very easily under these conditions and can cause serious damage to your turbo and engine. take it to somewhere better from now on and i would also have it looked at to make sure no damge was done.

I think he said 2002 S4 so wouldn't that be the V8 in witch case the regular oil will work but change it quickly and go back to synthetic. Synthetic helps all motors especially turbo cars but it works wonders in N/A cars as well. I also do recomend Amsoil IMO it's the best bang for your buck. search the net I think it's like 7-8 bucks a quart. then do it yourself. or take it to a shop they usually only charge 15-20 bucks if you bring your own stuff. hope this helps.
